I just read your thread about replacing your steering wheel........I was going to look into doing this myself. Do you have any before and after pictures of the car and steering wheel...........I agree that the leather steering wheel is important, and I didn't realize you could hook up the radio as well. I have a Sly with cloth interior and base stereo...........can the base stereo be hooked up to the steering wheel as well?..........Thanks so much

This is the best solution. This is the easiest solution. And you'll end up with better leather besides. GREAT IDEA, Brentil!

So the harness for the steering wheel controls is already there ready to go?

The harness is there if you have the convenience package with DIC, but I suspect it's there even without, as the horn still has to connect, and it's much simpler to use the same connector on all of them. BTW, I never posted pics b/c you really can't get the wheel and the seats in the same frame, except from a side profile, which shows little. Suffice it to say, it looks good, and feels good, but I agree that the GM leather wheel is nothing special, and having the wheel professionally wrapped would no doubt look even better. I just wanted a leather wheel and the radio controls, so this was the right option for me.
Wow... this great news. I am not happy that GM has linked the radio controls to the leather package. I did not want the leather... but the leather wheel would be cool and I really want the buttons. I will have to get a local price to replace my wheel. What is the GM part number for the replacement wheel? I hope all the cars have the wiring pre-installed. Just wish is was time to get my car... still waiting.

Thanks for the part numbers. I will price this up today. My Solstice is going to be aggressive with a ebony cloth interior. I assume that a black leather steering wheel will look the best. Any opinions?

The Corvette in standard form comes with a leather steering without cruise control or radio controls on the wheel. It looks like it would be possible to swap out the Solstice wheel for the Corvette wheel. You can order a Corvette wheel from the Pontiac dealership for about $165.00 and have the dealership install it before you pick up the car.
Ahhh... my phone is in and out here. Thank God we still have the internet! Well that is what happens when you are this far North and in the middle of the woods... 4 more days until I go home! Anyway, I managed to get through to my dealer... 15791813... black leather wheel... $394.40 CAD. A little steep, but it will give me what I want. I think I will wait until my car comes in and try and cut a deal.

I just replaced my plastic steering wheel (convenience pkg. only), with the leather -wrapped wheel. It is an easy upgrade. The DIC and cruise buttons continue to function, of course, and the additional radio controls work as well. I had access to a GM tech, who did it in about 25 minutes. You could easily do it yourself if you have a steering wheel puller. List price is steep, about 245.00, but I got it for 155.00, which was well worth it to me. I did not want leather seats ( I think the cloth ones look cool, and grip even better than the leather ones), but I knew I could add the wheel later, so I did
I'm slow. So you are saying the wiring for the radio controls are in the steering colum and the leather wheel just hooks up to them. Also was it the wheel or the puller that cost $245. Where did you get the wheel?
There are wires in the wheel which lead to a single connector. This connector plugs into another connector at the top of the column, just below the wheel. I work at a dealer, so I bought the wheel at employee price. Installation was free for me. It's nice to have connections
Hey, is the employee price the Dealer Employee price or the price all GM Employee's pay? Just curious if I went to my local dealer I tried to get the wheel if that is the price I should pay or if I get quoted something else.
I have never removed a wheel with an air bag before... I know it is safe if the battery is disconnected, but where is the actual air bag? Is it in the wheel or does it pass through the wheel when it goes off... I guess my question is do I have to remove it to change the wheel? I am pretty sure that I will be making this upgrade!

E- that was a dealership employee price
Nabbott- The airbag is a module in the center of the wheel- what you press to sound the horn, and yes, you have to pop it out to change the wheel.
So I want to be clear about this... as previously indicated the Solstice is pre-wired for the leather wheel with the stereo controls! "Patiotray" has completed this upgrade, but has anyone else tried this yet? I just want to be sure as my Solstice has arrived and I plan on ordering the black leather wrapped wheel tomorrow... it is $394.40 CAD so I want to be sure this will work! I assume the black is the colour that matches my ebony interior.

I installed a Wheelskins black leather cover on my wheel and am quite pleased with the result. I've used these before on every one of my vehicles and really wouldnt have it any other way. My Sol has no package options, so there are no switches on my wheel at all. Does anybody else have a car without a trip odometer?
