Does anyone out there have any diagrams of the steering column... how does the air bag come out? I have never removed one before... I assume after that you only use a puller to remove the wheel and disconnect the wires. Putting the new on should be easy.

So I ordered the part number given for black leather, 15791813. I was told today that that number has been replaced with 15850936, and that the new number is what is being shpped to me. Do anyone "in the know" know if this is correct? I haven't been able to find anything online about this new part number. Thanks.

This makes me nervous... my dealer told me he was very surprised that the wheel controls came with the wheel... I hope that you are still getting the full meal deal and do not have to order them separate... I almost called and ordered mine today... put it off until tomorrow... it is hard to spend this much money, but I really do not like the plastic wheel! I will see what number they tell me.

New part # is correct. Pricing is the same, so I expect the part will be the same. Just make sure it's correct when it comes in.

Great news! I am glad to hear... let us know if you have any trouble installing it. Feel free to take pictures! Anyway, just got off the phone... mine is ordered, but there is no price listing for the new number and they say that it is not in stock so they have no idea when I will get it... but it is ordered! I am holding them to the trade price for the old number of #394.40 CAD... it is retailing at around $500.00 CAD. Good luck installing yours!

I installed it. Pretty straight forward except that a standard steering wheel puller wont work, as GM no longer uses threaded holes to mount the puller with. There are special "GM Steering Wheel Puller Legs" that you need, and the chain stores don't seem to carry them. I ended up making my own using two of the bolts that came with the standard puller. Basically, I bent the last half inch of the bolts 90° using a vise, torch, and grinder. Without a torch, they snapped at about 60°.

This is what the intent is:

Airbag: I disconnected the battery, pulled the airbag fuse ( under passenger toeboard), and let it sit a half hour. To release the assembly from the steering wheel, there are two small holes on the back /side of the steering wheel. Stick something that will fit into the hole (I used a large jewelers screwdriver) to push the metal rod inward to release the airbag. It can be done one side at a time. I practiced using the new wheel to get a feel for what to do:

To unplug the airbag, there was two plugs that had a locking mechanism on them. Basically, the orange locks are pulled straight out, and then the latches on the sides of the plugs are pressed in to release the plug.

The steering wheel nut was then be removed, followed by using the steering wheel removal tool with my custom feet. After the wheel is broken free, the plug for the controls was unplugged from the steering column by lift a tab at the top of the jack to release the plug:

The new wheel's plug was plugged into the column, airbag wires fed thru the new wheel, and the wheel was installed on the column with nut. The splines on the mounting hole/shaft are keyed, so you cant get it on off center. There is an arrow on the wheel and a line on the tip of the shaft that line up to help get the keying right.

The airbag plugs were attached to the airbag, orange plug locks re-installed, and the airbag assembly was lined up and pushed home, locking into place. The design of the locking pins allowed it to be installed without having to push the release rods for installation; it just pushed into place.

I then re-inserted the airbag fuse, and re-connected the battery.

Then, from outside the car ( to stay clear of the airbag) , I reached behind the steering wheel to insert the ignition key, and turned it to the "run" position, and watched for the airbag light to go out through the back window. Once it was out, I put the car in neutral, pushed the clutch, and started the car, all while still outside the car, staying clear of the airbag.

After a half a minute or so, I turned it off, picked up my tools, and called it done.

I had a local body shop do my new steering wheel and now I have a service air bag light. I think they didn't let the capacitors go dead after unhooking the battery. Short of taking the car back to the dealer is there a way to reset the error light?

I have to say that I love this forum... thanks for the pictures! They are great. I will be home in two weeks... wonder if I will get lucky enough to have the wheel by then! Anyway, I guess you are happy with the wheel... I assume that it matches the shifter and the radio controls work? Great job!

Yes, we're happy with the wheel, and the controls work, even the mute button. The fake texture in the plastic wheel was pretty rough. Would have liked to have gotten a leather interior to begin with, but leather seats just dont hold up well here in the desert, especially in a convertable.

My future Solstice is coming without Cruise and DIC - any idea if the radio controls will still work? I'm thinking about adding a DIC at a later date... but that might be a whole other thread...
