Ok, I have about exhausted my options here. After replacing the stock clutch with the stage III from ClutchMasters, I now have a slight grind when going from 2nd to 3rd at anything over 3500 rpms. I have vaccum bled the system properly and have plenty of clutch pedal, I have replaced the fluid in the tranny. Whats even more wierd is it doesn't do it as bad when it is cold. I can't see how I had no problem before the clutch change, but I can't think of anything else to do except pull the tranny and have it looked at.

Any trans experts here give me some possible causes?

Thanks for the help.

Is the clutch engaging closer to the floor than before? It may need to be adjusted, but not sure how you would do that with a hydrolic clutch.

Normally you'd have some adjustments near the clutch pedal, but the dealer told me there isnt any... its a "self adjusting" clutch he said.

I thought it wasn't engaging all the way at first, but I get full engagement about halfway up from the floor. There is only about an inch of engagement with this style clutch, but if it were some sort of adjustment, why wouldn't it grind in other gears, why only after 3500 rpms? Is it possible to have a bad syncro with only 26K miles on the car. Just seems strange.

Are you sure the clutch is disengaging as it should?

Try pushing the clutch in and holding it in for a second or two before shifting and releasing the clutch.

If it never grinds when you do that the clutch is sticking for some reason. Perhaps some linkage is on a bind and breifly hangs up once in a while.

Other than that I'm guessing that your third gear synchronizer might be going bad.

You can try double clutching. Push in the clutch shift into neutral, relase the clutch, wait a second or so, then push in the clutch and shift into the next gear. If the grinding goes away when double clutching it might very well be a bad syncronizer.

As the OP mentioned if it were clutch it should do it in all gears. If it is only third it sounds to me like the 3rd gear synchro is gone. Especially makes sense with the mod's you've got to the engine.

There may be stronger parts available for the transmission, or OTOH an upgrade may be in order.

Let us know what you find out.

I'm noticing this (3rd gear only) on my '06 N/A. Doesn't grind, but it's close. Definatly 'clunks' as I put it into third. Does not do this on any other gears.

I'm definatly having this looked at soon. It feels like the gears are not syncing well.

2nd to 3rd has a bit of a bind, it must be something in the way this truck transmission syncros work.

Well, I took the car to another pontiac dealership and they were like "WOW" you have done some cool stuff to this car. I brought it in for the trans grind and also the TSB on the rear end slow turn grinding sound and the AC noise.

They were very nice and took care of the rear end noise by changing the fluid and adding the additive.

The AC noise they say they could not duplicate, but checked the bolts and expansion valve and said it was fine. Although it still sounds like a giant fan is on when the compressor kicks on. But I guess I can live with the sound as long as the compressor doesn't fail.

The trans grinding was an issue they would not tackle. they told me that there was just too much after market parts on the car and they would not even diagnose it for me, even when I offered to pay for the work performed. (go figure)

They said they have to much warranty work and don't have time to do any cash work (huh?). They were very nice about it but now I guess I am forced to take it to a local trans shop and hope they can diagnose.

Wish me luck.
