I will take the advice given here and stop running my tank down so low. Thanks.

However, here are some interesting figures:

09/19/06 14.589 gallons
08/20/06 14.241 gallons
08/31/06 13.798 gallons
08/17/06 13.624 gallons

more recently:
07/20/07 13.611 gallons
09/02/07 13.575 gallons
11/05/07 13.448 gallons

I think those fillups over 14 gallons were due to faulty gas pump readings.

Just curious...

No one has mentioned accounting for any gas in the fill tube...

I think those figures do account for the fill tube. The first time I filled up Mina I tried to top her off after the pump clicked off. The pump knew more than I did. Full means full it would seem on this car.
When the pump clicks off, her back teeth are already floating.

Just a thought on the evils of gas tank sediment. Would you not be aggitating these vile little tag a longs when you fill up with fuel? Allowing your fuel pump to ingest them anyway right after a fuel up! Thank the almighty for filters!

The filler neck is nearly level with the top of the tank, so "rounding up" won't work, since the filler tube is so short.

Cross slope can account for some difference in fill volume. If the filler side is higher than the off side, you will put more fuel in than spec, if the filler side is lower you will put in less.

I've been able to put an extra gallon in after the first automatic stop. But it takes a lot of pulls on the trigger. I often wonder if it's really putting that much more in or is it inaccurate because of the short bursts?

Gas pumps shut off based on back-pressure at the nozzle. Different pumps have different sensitivity levels, so they will shut off at different tank levels. Cross slope makes a difference here as well.

You are more likely to spill fuel if you top-up. Spilled fuel causes pollution, damages the finish, and could make a fire more likely.

Pumps are supposed to be accurate at any pressure or delivery rate.

I've had 14.5 once, the gas light didnt even come one before I filled it up. I kept the receipt because I was going to double check how much our car can hold, but I got lazy.

I've been filling up at 13 +-0.5 gallons per fill up.

PS on the track I was getting less than 8mpg, the gas light came on in the grid. I thought I would be ok for a couple laps but I didnt make it thru the first lap (3.1 mile).
