We stopped by Garmin's booth at the 2009 SEMA Show expecting a new GPS device or news of another OEM integration deal, but we stumbled upon something even better. Sometime next year, Garmin's Nuvi GPS devices will gain the ability to communicate with your car through ESP. In this case, we're not talking about psychic extra-sensory perception, but the EcoRoutes ESP module for Nuvi navigation devices.
The ESP module is a small hideaway box that communicates with Nuvi units via Bluetooth.
The ESP module is a hideaway box that connects to (and is powered by) your vehicle's OBD-II diagnostics port. The device gathers information about your vehicle's performance and relays that info via a Bluetooth data connection to your Garmin Nuvi GPS device atop your dashboard.
Using the Nuvi's touch screen, users can view a set of customizable gauges, view and clear fault codes when the Check Engine light comes on, and monitor real-time fuel economy and emissions data. The unit also provides data logging for users who want to track their performance and interfaces with the EcoRoutes software that's already present on current Garmin devices.
Garmin's representatives were happy to give us a quick demo of the system in action at their booth on the show floor and it looks pretty slick. Pricing and availability were unavailable at the time of publication, but we're told to expect more information at CES in January 2010, so stay tuned.

There is no indication whether this will be backward compatible, or did I miss something ?

snaponbob : Does the Dashdaq do the same mapping that Garmins do? Just asking.
Their website says yes, but its a bit pricey. The Dashdaq is $700 (on sale for $550) and the GPS package is $200 extra. No indication of what mapping software is available for it, or what it is compatible with.
So the big questions are going to be the cost of the ESP and whether the Nuvi itself can be upgraded or will have to be replaced, and at what cost.

well, I've got a dashhawk right now, but it would be nice if I had only one device cluttering up my dash instead of 2.
Whether or not I actually buy this will depend on a number of things, like whether or not it is compatible with my Garmin nuvi, how much it costs and what its capabilities are overall.

Well, the article states "The unit also provides data logging for users who want to track their performance and interfaces with the EcoRoutes software that's already present on current Garmin devices" but that is not very specific.
I have no idea which Garmin devices are considered "current" - technically I don't think my nuvi 760 is because it was replaced with the 765.
I guess we will have to wait and see which units it will work with.

Looks like I will giving my wife a Garmin for Christmas. Then, I can borrow it !!!!!! Other than our computers, phones, and remotes, if it takes any effort to actually USE gadgets I give her, they wind up in a drawer with dead batteries. HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

perris : one thing with the dashdaq most people aren't going to like, it needs an external gps antenae
it's by far the best ecu monitoring tool you can find though.
as far as the gps, you use either one or the other, I don't want to turn off the ecu monitor whenever I need a gps so I have two units anyway
Sounds like the Garmin solution will be the better choice for those of us that want a full-featured GPS, the ability to monitor the ECU when needed, and minimal clutter.

Imo it all depends on the software and what it will allow the end user to do, if it'll be locked down and will only allow you to pick from a select amount of pids/gauges then its bound to fail in the eyes of a car enthusiast and be more suited to the average joe.
The dashdaq is a scantool first and foremost with datalogging, enhanced parameters, external sensor expandability, user designed gauges and with gps/multimedia capabilities added as an afterthought, while the garmin is simply a gps with scantool capabilities added on.
dengel : ....I have no idea which Garmin devices are considered "current" - technically I don't think my nuvi 760 is because it was replaced with the 765.....
It appears that your 760, and my 770, will not quite make the grade. Rather annoying, considering that mine is less than a year and a half old.
I have found two different pieces of information. One says only that the ESP requires EcoRoute software, which is downloadable for the 7x5 series, but not the 7x0 series. The other says that the ESP will only work with a 1xxx series. The 1xxx are shipped with EcoRoute, the 7x5 are not, so it could just be that it will only work with the 1xxx out of the box, and the 7x5 have to be upgraded first.
Every report so far says that the system is still in development, and Garmin has a history of long, long development times for some of its products.
