Didn't know if anyone saw the article in Tuesday's WSJ, Personal Journal Section D, page 5..the column is called Eyes on the Road. Subject for this week was "Will Cars of Today Become Classics?"

The author interviewed several experts in the auto design industry and one, Ralph Giles from Chrysler said he thought that cars like "...The Pontiac Solstice convertible..." to have a "following" in the future!

So does that mean we should be parking our low VIN number, 2006 Sols in the garage? Hardly, but I'll be taking a little easier on mine...if you have access to WSJ.com, you can look this article up. Well worth a read! Who knows, maybe we'll be watching Barrett Jackson 20 yrs from now and they'll be selling off a 2006 low number Sol for $100,000. One can only dream...peace

The Solstice will certainly become a classic car in the future, due to its styling and relatively limited production. I would think the first 1000 will likely have potential to be "historical collection" pieces that could fetch large amounts of money 20+ years down the road, while GXPs are more likely to be the "muscle" cars that will be the target of restoration and show circuits. I'm not sure there will be much significance in terms of VIN numbers outside of the first 1000...unless the Solstice does happen to become an icon like the Corvette. I think that is probably unlikely though.

Besides, I think the greater investment is in the joy of operating the vehicle. If you want a return on your cash, there are far better investments than vehicles. I don't see the point in trying to net a huge return by storing a Solstice.

We can hope.

Coming up on 20 years for the Miata though, and I don't see 1990 models rising as collectables. I guess it depends on how many years Pontiac makes a similar looking Solstice. I thing 2010 is the first update expected?

I believe SmallDealer said 2011. If I'm not mistaken

No doubt it will become a classis. Of course you have to wait 20 years or so.

Cars can be a great investment if you treat them like an investment. Buying a brand new car and waiting 20+ years to see a return is a pretty bad investment though. You would also have to leave your heart at home and buy strictly for the investment purpose. I have no doubt if I bought a 1973 RSR clone it will be worth double in 5 years. Same with my 914-6. It's already worth alot more then what I bought it for.

But I look at it more of "In case things get bad I can always sell it".

The beauty of buying and selling classic cars is if you are smart about it you can gain money or break even. To me thats a plus over buying a newer car. In a new car I will never see my money back. Well unless I wait the 20 years.
