Need Help with SCCA Stripe Kit!

Hello,
I recently purchased your striping kit to install on my white gxp. I saw the picture on your site of the white gxp and wanted to install them with the same gap between the stripes. Here's my problem....how on earth do you center them? I know you guys said it was a 4 inch gap, but how do you figure out the center of the hood and trunk to put the gap between the stripes. I spent some time yesterday trying to get it right and gave up hoping you could shed some expertise on this subject. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm really hoping to try again tomorrow with your direction. Thanks gentlemen!

Steve,

What has worked best for me is to take white string and run it across the hood edge to edge holding it in place with tape up by the windshield to each hood tip corner. Then remove the string so it is straight and not wrapped around to the edges, measure it (or fold it in half) and mark the middle with a marker. Place it back in the same spot. Then take another string and run it from that center mark down the hood to the center of the nose badge. Then take two strips of 2 inch wide painters tape and run them down the hood using the center string as the reference point for the inside edge of each tape strip. This will give you the 4 inch center line of the hood to gap the stripes. Do the same for the rear lid.

If you have removed your badges, then you can use three strings across the hood. The one listed above, one mid way, and one at the lower inner points of the headlight cut outs. Then use the three marker points vice the center line string to lay the 2 inch painters tape.

I used a tape measure to mark the exact center of the hood and trunk panels. Mark the centerline using water soluable marker pen. Then using 2 inch wide blue painters tape, lay down one row of the tape with the inside edge of the tape aligned with marked center line. You can lift the painters tape easily and relay it till you get it perfect. You then lay down a second row of the 2 inch painters tape aligned with the center line edge of the first row fo tape. You then have a 4 inch wide "stripe" made up of the 2 rows of 2 inch painters tape.

The outside edges of the tape "stripe" now forms a guide for installation of the racing stripes with a 4 inch separation between them.

I have done this process successfully on two cars and it makes alignment very easy and low stress.

You didn't cut your stripes apart, did you?

My stripes came already spaced correctly on the transfer paper.

I used a ruler to find the center of the transfer paper and drew a line down the middle. This way I could line up the middle of the top of the transfer paper and the middler of the bottom of the transfer paper with two points on the car.

Trunk:
I used the middle of my XM antenna for the botton of the trunk and I used the middle of the top of the trunk between the humps for the top point.

Hood:
For the front I used the middle of the Ponitac arrow on the bumper and lined that up looking through the front windshield and used the middle of the Pontiac arrow on the middle console between the seats.

This is what worked for me. It may not be the best method, but it worked.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. The stripes are separate, but I did not measure the "space" between the transfer paper and the stripe. If that is two inches, then I guess all I've gotta do is find the center of the hood using the string or tape measure approach. I'm gonna measure the gap on the transfer tape and see if I can't find the center with the string/tape measure approach. Gonna give this a shot on Saturday and hopefully post pics of the finished product. Thanks everyone!

This was my first time putting stripes on a car. Just make sure you take your time and follow the directions supplied by ASAP.
