The G8 summit is scheduled to be held in Scotland this year from July 6-8. For those who don't know what the G8 is, it's the meeting of eight representatives who have the power to navigate our collective future through intensive negotiations which will ultimately impact all involved nations. The following links show one of several issues that will be on the table. I'm curious to see how it might impact the auto industry.
What the G8 does or what we as individuals do in conserving and recycling and otherwise looking after the environment are about to be made totally insignificant by the industrial giant of China. China, after the US is currently the number two importer of petroleum products. They have vast coal reserves but it is all "dirty" coal like we haven't used in 100 years. As their populace trades in their chinese Schwinn's for Chevy's who is to say that those vehicles are up to the CARB II standards. They only have to meet standards for what gets exported. And if they somehow become successful in wresting Unocal away from Chevron's offer then they could at some point get to where they could just shut off our oil supply faster than any terrorist from the mid-east. And a note highlighted Monday eve on "On Point" was that they could soon be selling $5000 cars at Wal-Mart, or simply made a bid for GM. The Chinese did back out of a deal that would have saved Rover and MG. So they are not adverse to investing in foreign (to them) auto companies.
