You've missed a lot, but

you've been missed a lot more!

Thank you so much for your service to our country. You've been away from the Forum for over 10 months. Are you back in the States? Perhaps you can post about some of your adventures Over There.

As far as I can tell you haven't missed a thing unless you miss your flight home, so do us all a favor and don't miss that flight!!!!!

Now close your eyes and pictures this: Floods in the northeast, I don't think that is much to miss....Daily rains in the southeast, meaning no one is able to put the tops down, we are waiting on you to get home for all this drama to clear up So with that being said , hurry back SAFELY. We are waiting to take a long ride with you with the tops down in celebration of your return. God bless you with big hugs and kisses

Well, I'm in Iraq until Dec . . .

I miss my avatar . . . I'll have to see if I can find it.

Doesn't seem like ten months, where has the time gone?

Let's see I got back from the desert last July then left for pre-deployment training in August, got back to the desert for this tour . . . finally got an internet connection . . . and here I am.

I've missed the forum, but I am not looking forward to reading all the posts I've missed . . . maybe I should just start fresh, act like a noob . . . hijack threads and tell long pointless stories about the Apprentice Solstice promotion, the "correct" plural of Sols (Solstii? Solstices? Carmob?) . . .

I just wanted to share this with y'all:

As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room. This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home.

One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian. Mike came from a small town near Selma, Alabama. He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17 he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School, then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed.

As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing. Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed it onto the inside of his shirt. Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I know, the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event. One day the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it. That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all of us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could.

The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept. Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room. As I said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to pledge our allegiance to our flag and country.

So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country.'

'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'

I am not a Hero, I am just a wife, but my husband is. He has been in the Army for 10 years now. I have stood by him for 8 of those years. He is leaving in two or so weeks for his third deployment in 5 years. Each time he goes life changes. I thank my lucky stars that he comes home safe and sound each time. I can't thank the other Soldiers he works with enough for what they do as well as the sacrifice their families make. So if you have served in the military or as a loved one THANK YOU!

The military personnel often get to bask in the light of their accomplishments, which are awesome.

However, I would like to take this opportunity to put military spouses, such as AmericanGirl, in the spotlight. God bless you all for your incredible support of those serving our country, and keeping the home ready and warm for their triumphant return!

Yes, AmericanGirl, you ARE a hero! My special salute to you and others like you:

I agree completely with Gizmo. Our military spouses are heroes. I was married most of my 21 years in the Marine Corps and was deployed to 36 countries. I could concentrate on doing my job and taking care of my Marines because I knew that my wife was taking care of our kids and everything else at home. I think many times the deployments are harder on our loved ones back home than on us. I always looked forward to getting letters and care packages from home.

Good luck with your deployment gijoey and stay safe! There are many veterans and spouses here on the forum that I'm sure you can count on for moral support.
