February is National Heart Month. Did you know that the #1 killer of American women is heart disease. If you see women in red dresses today it is in support of awareness of this. Men, it's your month also. Know the risk factors. Know the warning signs. DO NOT ignore them.

I have first-hand experience at denial and ignoring the facts. I had warning signs. I ignored and denied. It came down to surgery nine weeks ago. I now feel great and have realized how lousy and tired I was before - but it crept up on me over time and I thought I was just getting old.

My condition could have led to an immediate lights out with only a slim chance of survival outside of a hospital.

Heart disease knows no age limit. I had neighbor in his thirties, a brick mason - healthy as a horse and physically active 12 hours a day. And then lights out. Regardless of your age or gender, I urge you to discover where you are in terms of:
*blood pressure
*cholesterol
*risk factors of family history, workplace, weight

Do this for the ones who are not ready to be the ones left behind.

I can only second what achieftan has written, having gone through my eye-opener a year ago this month. I, too, thought I was just tired and getting older.

Pay attention and see your doctor if any of the warning signs are present in your daily life!

Thanks for the reminder!

I workout 2-5 times a week. I have been consistently doing dance aerobics for the last 10 years. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet. I don't drink caffeine. And I rarely drink.

It's like I tell the guys I work with. I'm going to work THE most important muscle in the body and I am not talking about THAT one!

It got my mom and my grandma had a bad heart for 20 years before it got her.

Longevity is on my dad's side. All his relatives live to be about 100 no matter what! So I'm either going to check out early or live to be 120!

The last 2 years I've been exercising as much as 5-6 times a week. Lately it's been 4. Mainly cause I have a few issues and also because I've lost a lot of pounds and don't want to end up like my mom. Now if I could only stay away from eating cookies and chocolate!!

My mom had warning signs for about 6 weeks before she ended up in the hospital and passed away. Her right arm (yes...it's the right in women!) bothered her to the point she couldn't even hold a pen and write anymore. She thought it was something else as the doc had just done a thorough examination a few weeks before it all started. And he was especially concerned with her heart as she was extremely obese. She had absolutely no trouble before that time, but it's what usually gets the morbidly obese.

I watched my good friend who was my retired manager go through the exact same things she went through at the same ages. He was also morbidly obese. It's a very sad thing to see. He passed away about 1 year ago from a combination of an extremely fast acting leukemia and his heart. His heart gave out about a week after he began treatment for the leukemia despite the fact he tolerated the treatment very well. He passed away in a very similar fashion as my mom. That was a tough one for me.

So watch your diet, and get lots of exercise. What's meant to be is meant to be, but it can't hurt to do these things!!

I take this quite seriously now, both my parents have high blood pressure, and mine had been borderline high since age 14. Some know of my little story, but I thought I'd share for those that didn't.

Well about 8 months ago, I felt like I was going to pass out. Luckily I was close to my parents house, asked my dad to get me his blood pressure monitor. They couldn't find it, and I ended up telling them to take me to the hospital. I had a hard time staying awake, just felt like I was going to faint. In the car ride, my arm started feeling very tight, and I didn't want to tell my parents. I didn't need them having an accident or anything.

Anyway, got to the ER, and they brought out a wheelchair for me. I was taken in very quickly, and when they took my pressure, I was at 199 over 100 just sitting in the wheelchair.

Well now I'm on blood pressure medication, and doing much better. My New Years resolution was to get healthier. I've started exercising much more, at about 6-7 days a week now. I either do 45 minutes on the elliptical, or 15 minutes and a little over an hour on the bowflex.

So I took my pressure today, and it's a whopping 120 over 71. My goal is to one day get off my medication. When my parents were taking me to the hospital, my mom was praying for her son to be okay. If I can do anything to never let her go through that again, I will. As has been said, there are no rules, or specific type of person. I was 29, and have been a vegetarian for about 10 years.
