GXP Beater?

The Miata has always been a fairly low powered car intentionally and side from peopel shoehorning V8s into them, there haven't been a lot of options.

Now there is a turbo kit for them that gives 248 bhp, and results in a 5 second 0-60 and a 155 mph top speed. In case you don't recall, a stock GXP does those in 0,6 secs. slower and tops out at 143 or so (148 for the coupe).

If you have a GMPP or other tune you can still probably wave goodbye to them, but stock Solstices should look closely before having a stoplight drag if it looks like this

I've seen a few, but usually lower output. This one isn't cheap, but approaches the output of the Mazdaspeed 3, which is what they should have put into a special Miata version years ago. This is a half way step for those not wanting to go the V8 route.

When I was shopping for a toy car after selling my crotch missile, I set a few parameters in stone:

- Domestic
- Rear wheel drive
- 4 cylinder turbocharged
- Light-weight

Not sure if I purposefully set these parameters just to justify the Kappa car, but no regrets so far.

The Kappa isn't exactly light weight, but I am definitely with you in the no regrets category.

Sort of looks like a Solstice with a custom nose.

Yeah, Mazda finally figured out that happy smiling faces don't necessarily sell cars.

I have a turbo kit going on my Miata RF as we speak. It is considerably more powerful than the BBR kit above. They are using my RF for the install video and photos, etc.

Here is the before dyno of my car. It had an aftermarket header, exhaust and tune.

Here is my car with mods mentioned above getting run away from by their turbo car.

Hoping to have it back in a couple of weeks. I'd expect it to easily outperform a stock or mildly tuned GXP, but a more highly tuned GXP would likely be too powerful (the charity car is getting the 402 hp RPM Motorsports upgrade next week. I'll have to do some back to backs.

Nice set up. They are getting around 275 crank and the car weighs close to 700 lbs. less than a Kappa! You'd need a turbo swap on a portly Kappa to best that.

Any idea of acceleration times?

PS - on sticking the larger Mazda 2.5 engine in as a prelude to such tuning -

Quote:
HP: Where a stock NC might dyno 140whp, expect 170 NA on the 2.5 w/bolt-ons, 180 with street cams, 200 with race cams 220 with an intake/ITBs, 240 with high compression pistons and all of the above. Note that because the torque is higher and the curve is more broad, a 2.5 170hp will feel much stronger below 6k than the 2.0 at the same HP.

Mine should be closer to 300 crank on E85. No idea on acceleration - likely sub-5 0-60's. I have quite a bit more rubber than a stock Miata. BTW, the only V8 swap available starts at $50K (plus the car). Given that I already have a V8 Sol, I think this Miata is better suited to doubling the stock hp while adding very little weight. These are tiny cars and are all about handling and balance. I had a 1993 black with red and BBS LE Miata with a Jackson Racing blower that took it from 116 hp to 200 and it was an absolute blast. After driving the Miata, the Sol feels like a big GT car. I will say the charity car is super fun to drive and all it has on it are wheels, tires, exhaust and coilovers. Can't wait to get the engine work next week.
