Think somebody asked, so this is what the situation is looking like at this time.

SUBJECT: GMPP Sold on 2007 MY GM Vehicles Prior to September 7, 2006

The purpose of this bulletin is to announce price adjustments and refunds GM Protection Plan (GMPP) will be making to those customers who purchased a GMPP along with their 2007 model year GM vehicle prior to September 7, 2006.

The recently announced GM 5 year/100,000 mile manufacturer’s powertrain warranty extension is applicable to all 2007 model year GM makes, excluding medium duty trucks, and will be given retroactively to all owners of eligible 2007 model year GM vehicles sold before September 7, 2006. In a positive reaction to GM’s powertrain warranty extension GMPP has significantly reduced prices on mechanical plans sold on 2007 model year GM vehicles, excluding medium duty trucks, effective September 7, 2006.

GMPP customers that purchased a Basic Guard plan on their 2007 model year GM vehicle prior to September 7th will receive a full refund of the purchase price. The refund will be sent to the lienholder on record if the vehicle was financed or to the customer if there is no lienholder. Basic Guard customers will receive a full refund since the enhancement to the GM new vehicle limited warranty effectively makes this level of coverage unnecessary.

Those GMPP customers who, prior to September 7th, purchased a Major Guard, Value Guard, or Smart Protection plan, and had coverage terms greater than 36 months/36,000 miles on their 2007 model year GM vehicle will receive a price adjustment. Customers will be given the option to flat cancel their GMPP coverage if they wish to do so. They will be advised to return to their dealership for these cancellations.

Within 6 – 8 weeks GMPP customers will receive a letter explaining the refund and price adjustment, and it will advise those customers that are receiving a price adjustment and wish to flat cancel their coverage to return to their dealership.

Well we are in that 6-8 week window, so this week GM has sent dealerships additional information. The letters are about to go out to those effected. Opens another 6-8 week window, but the check is almost in the mail.

As an recap:

On September 6, 2006, GM introduced a 5/100 Limited Powertrain Warranty for all 2007 model year GM vehicles.

It was decided that all GMPP Basic Guard vehicle service contracts sold on 2007 model year GM vehicles prior to September 7, 2006, would be cancelled with a full refund to the customer or lienholder since the GM 5/100 Limited Powertrain Warranty essentially eliminates the need for this coverage.

On October 27, a letter is scheduled to be sent by GMPP to all Basic Guard customers who will be receiving a full refund advising them of their refund amount.

Another letter will be sent by GMPP to customers who purchased a Major Guard, Value Guard, or Smart Protection vehicle service contract on a 2007 model year GM vehicle prior to September 7, 2006, advising them that they will be receiving a partial refund of the service contract cost due to the enhanced GM warranty.

For those with Basic Guard:

Recently you received a letter from General Motors informing you that your manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty on your 2007 model year GM vehicle has changed to now include powertrain component coverage for up to 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. As a result of the lengthening of the powertrain coverage you qualify for a refund of the full cost of the GM Protection Plan Basic Guard vehicle service contract that you purchased. The powertrain warranty enhancement to the GMNew Vehicle Limited Warranty effectively makes the level of vehicle service contract coverage you purchased unnecessary. A refund of $[REFUND AMOUNT] will be sent to you or your lienholder, [LIENHOLDER NAME], to reduce the amount you owe within 6-8 weeks. This will be done automatically and there is no action necessary on your part.

GM Protection Plan has a full line of other mechanical protection plans designed to enhance GM’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty on your 2007 model year vehicle. These other GMPP plans provide broad coverage on mechanical components not covered by GM’s limited powertrain warranty extension. Please contact the GM dealership where you purchased your vehicle if you have questions on what GMPP plans are available to you. Questions on your refund can be directed to your GM dealership or you may call 1-888-829-9419.

Sincerely,
The GM Protection Plan Team

For those with Major Guard, Value Guard or Smart Protection:

Recently you received a letter from General Motors informing you that your manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty on your 2007 model year GM/Saturn vehicle has changed to now include powertrain component coverage for up to 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. As a result of this lengthening of the powertrain coverage you qualify for a refund of a portion of the cost of the GM Protection Plan Major Guard/Value Guard/Smart Protection vehicle service contract that you purchased. A refund of $[REFUND AMOUNT] will be sent to you or your lienholder, [LIENHOLDER NAME], to reduce the amount you owe within 6-8 weeks. This will be done automatically and there is no action necessary on your part.

If you have any questions about your GM Protection Plan coverage please contact the GM dealership where you purchased your vehicle, or call 1-888-829-9419. If you do not want to retain your current GM Protection Plan coverage at the reduced price, please contact the GM dealership where you purchased your vehicle and they can assist you with either canceling your current contract for a full refund or selecting an alternative time/mileage combination that better meets your needs with the new limited powertrain warranty.

By maintaining GM Protection Plan coverage on your vehicle, you still retain the great benefits of enhanced mechanical repair coverage that supplements the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty, but at a significantly reduced price.

Sincerely,
The GM Protection PlanTeam
