Location: buzzard..what buzzard..do you see a buzzard..I didn't see a buzzard...or that little sparrow either- or dat squirrel
So i ran SOS ccw yesterday.
#1...342 is closed near Freeport for bridge work so i had to go up the rest of 258 and down 800 to 799. All in all not bad...adds 15 miles to the run
#2...SR9 near Cadiz is being repaved so it was one lane only for about 2 miles.
#3 US22 was being repaved the entire distance back to 152 so it was slow going.
#4...the work on shoring up 152 near empire is still going on while they build a huge retaining wall....so it was stoplight/ one lane only.
So- all in all- it was un-timeable...and a bit boring.
Doing 164 in reverse is interesting. Carnut's Corner sneaks up on you in a hurry ...Kathy's Kurve is nothing to worry about either.
Location: buzzard..what buzzard..do you see a buzzard..I didn't see a buzzard...or that little sparrow either- or dat squirrel
For those of you road Captaining the SOS and want to save some time - read below.
Currently both the cw and ccw start and end at N-town .
Clockwise goes out to Scio....to Kilgore to the River ...down to Cadiz and back to Scio.
At this point - if you wish- you can finish by taking 151 thru Scio and over to SR212....then take SR212 to Zoar and get on I-77 at mm93...you are then 15 minutes from the hotels instead of 45 at N-town.
For Counterclockwise.....N-town to Scio..to Cadiz...to the River..then 39 to Salineville and down 164 to Kilgore. At that point..do not go down SR9 to 646...STAY ON 164 until it dead ends at SR212 and then follow the same instructions as above.
There is a rest area at Atwood Lake Dam that you can use instead of the one in Scio.
Just food for thought.....
Both runs give you the same excitement...you just get back to base camp about 45 minutes earlier.
I did my friend (still some issues to work through but hey.. The best maps possible are a good thing and if i have folks like JRinKY willing to help, that is for the good of all). Working on the new maps now given Druid's new start points.
Just need to work on the "timing issues". Contrary to what some thought, it is not a time trial like an indy event. It is the time it takes from fluids to enter the lips and leave the urethra. As i age, i set new records for that time trial on a daily basis.

Excellent News - With this News I shall go purchase my GPS!

I am aiming this at JRinKY and Slyguy: My husband and I will be helping with a couple of the runs for 2010. I just got a Garmin Nuvi 780. Will we be able to upload routes to the device? If so, what do I need to do or have to get the uploads? We will be in Zanesville in October.

It depends on what you want to be able to do.
Garmin has software called MapSource that lets you look at maps, create routes, upload information to, and download information from, your GPS. It is what I am using for the route work I am doing. (Slyguy is getting a lot deeper into the actual code, which is a place I don't want to go.) One of the neat things about MapSource is you can pull track information from the GPS and look at where you have been, when you were there, and how fast you were going.
MapSource is free with the GPS, although you may have to contact Garmin to get it.
If all you want to do is have the routes that we have created, you don't really have to do anything. Several of us have the software and cables, and can load it for you at the meet. Slyguy is also working on putting the information on an SD card.
Keep in mind that everything is still being developed, and the routes will probably not be completely de-bugged by October. In fact, we are really doing all this for next summer, so October is pretty much a development session.

JRinKY's assessment was dead on.
The goal is to make the maps as good as possible for Road Captains in the short term. They are the ones who accept responsibility above others and need the tools to assist in that endeavor. The 780 will work.
Of course, everyone will be able to load the maps into their devices once we refine the maps. We are still working out the details on that front. At the last T2TR, we simply loaded the maps into anyone's device. We have talked about loading stuff onto a card that folks just pop in but everything is still in development. i tend to lean on the side of all of the cool possibilities but logic always pulls me back to what works best. Getting to that point soon (and with the help of folks like JRinKY who pull me back from being too geek). The key is.. Those who are leading will have the maps as best as we can make them and get them first. Distribution to others would be cool but not a top priority at this point. Rc's have the ultimate responsibility and they must have the best tools possible..

Cool. FYI: For my needs, the MapQuest plots are not necessary.
MapQuest. That is "Routes for Dummies". That is not what we are trying to achieve. D2 was just trying to explain. Not a time for splitting hairs on that front.
Ease up my friend.
His mapquest plots are what is used to refine these maps. All contribute in their own way and together we make this work. Druid (and others) work out the major course and major "stops" that folks need for these journeys and visuals beyond a garmin to understand key points. The thing we can add to that is to use precise lat/long coordinates to plot out major stuff along the path to keep people safe. That is the goal in Oct.
i learned the hard way. i had things plotted on my Garmin at T2TR but it steered me wrong many times and didn't have "visuals". i learned to balance garmin with mapquest and visuals (D2 is a master at visuals). That is why i want to map things close and then lay things into the data files to pull it all together. No one approach is "right". For example, i like to ride snowmobiles in the winter in the UP. I used a garmin to get me to my hotel one time while pulling sleds in a trailer behind me. The garmin did not understand that some open roads in the summer become closed roads in winter. To keep from freezing to death at a bottle neck the Garmin said was a "road", i had to park my truck, drop my sleds and make my way to the hotel via the great outback trails on the sleds with full winter gear and all we could carry on the sleds.
A Garmin is a tool... Nothing less and nothing more. A great tool but it must be used in context.

Mike made the following post:
Quote:
druid-2 : I have detailed excel descriptions (including visuals)
and Mark is plotting my information into mapquest
I am fairly confident that I understood him perfectly, and I am not splitting hairs about anything. My reply was to tell him that I did not need for Mark to go to the trouble of plotting anything into MapQuest for me, that all I need is the list of turns.
