For those curious as to mileage to the track and want to try and calculate - the track is about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati right off I-71 (exit 57). Depending which way you come in, it's 57 miles from Louisville up I-71N, and about 50 miles from Cincinnati on I-71S.

I-71 is a nice smooth ride, but there are also lots of side roads you can use to get there without having to go out of the way into Louisville or Cincinnati. More direct, if not more twisty.

please explain "point to pass"
for timing i presume you mean some official with a stop watch as part of the event
(for lap time info)
Will passing be allowed?
Pass at will?
Pass inside only?
Pass only in designated areas (straights).

Rules and Regulations, amateur race track, scca, sports car racing, south haven, michigan | Gingerman Raceway, Ltd.

A stop watch is not ‘timing’ in 2009. I have a husband with that technology.
Will transponders be made available for rental? That would allow for ‘sector’ speeds as well.

sometimes you people "in the know" need to cut us rookies a little slack.

Sorry if anything I said came out not as intended.
I assumed the guy renting the track had been around the block a few times. If that is not the case, then I applaud his undertaking even more. Securing a site and putting an event on is a rather daunting task. I surely don't have the patients for it. -J

The LADY in charge of this operation was able to get us in
to the track last saturday as part of an "OPEN HOUSE" situation

There were Camaro's Firebirds, Mustangs, Vettes & Porsches (to name a few)

we signed the waiver agreeing not to pass the pace car (truck) and to keep a safe distance.

There were no other rules and regs.

For a day at the track where we "own" the track for a day I'm sure there will be many
other stipulations.

You, as a person in the know, could be a tremendous asset here by offering
tips, suggestions and just general overall (prior) knowledge of how such events
can (or should) be run or controlled.

If I make the trek, I would be more than happy to help on the day.
I am sure we would want to bring slicks, so I would be purchasing a trailer or at lest a hitch that accepts a tire rack. I can’t see bringing both cars halfway across the country.
I hate to jinx the situation, what would be the ‘R…” contingency. -J

Wow.... Thanks for the questions
So far the questions are wonderful, I wish I had the answers for you now but I dont and I am taking note of all..

No I have not been around the block a few times... I have only been on the track during their Drive the Track Sale 2x a year the past 2 years. This is one reason I started this thread to get the questions needed since I know nothing about this type of event. I hosted the Southeast Regional in Lex and also this weekend so I do some experience in organizing an event. This will require hotel, food and most important a schedule. As soon as I get with the track and get the details I hope to answer everyones questions and also the dates that would be open which will be the deciding factor for most people.

Keep the Questions coming.....

Thanks again... Kim

My information is a couple of years old, so it may be out of date. Hopefully Kim will get a new response that is a bit "friendlier".

Shortly after the track opened, and even while it was being built, the area SCCA regions contacted the owners about rentals for the purpose of practice and race car development. To say the least, the response was pretty negative.

The only conditions under which they would allow track usage at that time were basically yellow-flag caution rules. Specifically: A pace car would always be in use. No passing of any kind. No dropping back from the pace car to do "sprints". The pace cars weren't supposed to exceed 100 MPH.

Since all of that was with full race-prepped cars and drivers with competition licenses, it was pretty clear that they didn't want us there, so we quit asking. Maybe they are more agreeable now. Of course, SMI should have conrol of the track by next summer, so things may be even more different. Hopefully for the better.

Hey JR, Well things have changed there because everyone was nice, the pace trucks gave us faster laps. I think everyone needs to realize this is NOT for racing, this is for driving the track at a fast speed and enjoying how your car handles. When all of us were done Saturday all we wanted to do was go back and run more laps. When you figure it was $40 for 3 laps and that was it unless you spent more money and got extra laps, it left you wanting more. What we are planning is getting the track for a day, just our cars and play on the track all day long.
RedHeadedRedline I know what you are looking for and this is not it, changing into slicks and passing etc. That is at tracks where you must have roll bars and helmets. This is just for fun, fast driving and enjoying your car. We all are going back and the cost will be well worth it.
KYGXP has opened this thread to SEE who would be interested in going again or trying it out for the first time. Money would have to be upfront so the track can be booked. The more people we have the less cost to each person. We will know more in the new year when the track will have open slots or if people let us know when they feel is the best time we can get a idea of a month.

So keep posting questions and KY will check out what is available and post here

First, an apology for poor word choice. The people at the speedway were always nice, polite, courteous, friendly, etc. It was their answer that wasn't, even though it was delivered in a nice manner.

We were looking for what several in this and other threads have asked for and/or suggested: An essentially unrestricted speed limit for lapping the track. We didn't want to "race", but did need to be able to pass, as development and testing necessarily requires different speeds by different cars at the same time. Just as in an open track day different people will want to go at different speeds.

It doesn't sound like anything has changed (yet) but there is still hope. My fear is that insurance and liability concerns will keep the pace cars out, and the speeds down.

[color="Blue"]No apology needed JR, I knew what you meant. I think the difference here is that this track is allowing no helmet no roll bar. That puts it into a different bracket than the fast as you want without a pace car.

Let me tell you, OUR SPEED DEMON DaShark, who is a bat out of hell, speed is his middle name.......Loved the track and also just wanted more laps.
We don't want to see anyone wipe out, get injured or wipe out someone else.......I have drove on those other tracks, but with a car I didn't care about and that was a road course at WATKINS GLEN.....I use to be a race Marshall at the MOSPORT speedway in Canada. It was fun but not like this track was.........So I hope you and everyone else join us when we go back, you just cant imagine what fun we all had the night before, that day and the ride back from the track.......not to mention how bad everyone was that night!!!!!![ and I also forgot to add KYGXP has set up the Mustang group there as well, they love it too./

Thank you for thinking of me personally.
It is a bit of a hike to not be able to get the most out of a test & tune. Getting a chance to run at triple digits is a blast and I recommend anyone that would like to try it do so. If you were closer (Darlington) we would be right there with you, if for nothing else than the photo-op.
I truly wish there was a viable, SCCA legal, rollbar solution, that didn’t destroy the interior.
Good luck! We can't get two other couples to agree on where to go to dinner; trying to get a 100 people to show up at the same place at the same time is a herculean task.
You do however have a pretty sweet carrot. -Joyce
