At one of our meets in the past few months getting together for the VIR holiday laps peaked some interest among the attendees... Bellaverde was kind enough to remind us of this wonderful upcoming charity event at Virginia International Raceway where you can have fun and support a great cause. Here is the press release from VIR:

Danville, VA (November 5, 2009) - Holiday Laps returns Friday, November 13, as VIRginia International Raceway's annual charity fund raising event that benefits the Salvation Army in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties.
Holiday Laps allows donors who bring $25 in cash, new toys or non perishable foods to drive VIR's famed 3.27 mile Full Course behind one of the track's Volkswagen pace cars in sessions lasting 20-25 minutes. Speeds are controlled, but still brisk enough to be very entertaining. Holiday Laps is the opening event in the WBTM-AM and WAKG-FM annual holiday auction.
"Donations support the entire VIR area, with all the surrounding communities benefiting from the generosity of fans who participate," said track managing partner Connie Nyholm. "We treasure the support of the region and have found that this is a great way to repay that support."
The smiles generated by Holiday Laps begin with the first group on the track - their faces brightened by the thrill of driving the same track and seeing VIR from a new perspective. More smiles get created when the Salvation Army does their good deeds during the holidays and throughout the year.
No special equipment is needed to take part in Holiday Laps. Past years have seen everything from hot rods, luxury cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles on the track. The gates open early Friday morning and sessions continue until the last one begins around 4:00 that afternoon. Every vehicle taking part receives a custom 8x10 photo of the experience, donated by VIR's photographers, F&S Enterprises. Raffle tickets for 'hot laps' in a VW pace car and a ride in one of SASCO Motorsports' vintage race cars, driven by owner Dave Handy are on offer as well. Last year's winners got to ride in Dave's 1968 McLaren Can-Am car. The Pagoda Grill in the paddock will have refreshments all day.
For a double dose of holiday joy, come out and drive VIR while doing the most good for needy children in the area. To keep your donations in the VIR community, make any checks payable to the Danville, Virginia Salvation Army.
VIRginia International Raceway is a multi-purpose road racing facility, located on the Dan River between Danville and South Boston, Virginia. In case you don't know; this shows the twists, turns and elevation at VIR.
Those interested in a caravan from the Triangle area, we will meet at the NYBD (New York Bagel & Deli) 2050 Kildaire Farm Rd, Cary, NC 27518-6614 (It's the plaza with Walmart and Harris Teeter at intersection of Tryon and Kildaire Farm Rd). Maybe grab a quick bite for breakfast, be gassed up and ready to depart for VIR at 9:30AM. We should arrive at VIR sometime around 11AM, spend some time on the track, maybe grab lunch and then head back toward the Triangle.
Please send a PM to SKY FOR US about this! Thanks!

Would have loved to but hubby just started a job and cash is tight. Hopefully a group can get together for next years event.
I realize that coming from SC the cost of the journey is greater than the event itself, but perhaps this is a good time to mention that they also accept donations of non-perishable food or toys. That might help keep the cost down if you have something already on hand...

I was planning on going to this event. Unfortunately, my work schedule had to be re-arranged yesterday, so I can't get Friday off. I'll plan on going the next time.
If you go and have a digital camera or video camera, we'd like to see some pics!

We were thinking about coming down, but the weather isn't looking too promising. If it isn't raining tomorrow morning, we will meet y'all at the track. :idk:

Agreed; I would call this a fair weather only event. I don't know for sure how they work it here, but at Watkins Glen's Charity lap day I'm pretty sure it's a no go in the rain.
