WCKCC So Cal Drive Report

First off we must say thank you to the following:

Saturn of Ontario:
Provided us with a place to meet, we just about filled their lot to capacity!
Filled our tummies with plenty of snacks. Hotdogs, cakes, chips, coldcut sandwich, soda's and water.

Bill and Gail:
Provided us with a home at the top of Big Bear. They also provided us with fresh fruit, soda's, water, chips, cheese, crackers, coldcuts, and a rest room.

Crimson Avenger:
Leading us, and trying his hardest to keep us all together. Their was a lot of radio traffic with him and those that had radios trying to do this. At one point he was challenged by a truck across the roadway, while trying to avoid a collision he found the headlights of another truck coming straight at him. His training from the prior day was put to use and all went well. Nice driving Vince!

The Middlemen:
Fakebill who brought it all together in record time, and those at the Sky forum

The drive:

We left Saturn of Ontario and headed to get fuel. A Sky that showed up late and met us there was hit as a pick up backed into him. Their was minimal damage and he was able to continue driving with us.

As we approached highway 18 we discovered it was closed and had to head up the mountain on highway 330. This was anice drive and we were just about all nose to tail. We stopped at the rest stop along the lake, and also at the school house. Several pictures by many members were taked at both locations. If anyone has a site to add pictures to let us know so that I and others can post ours.

We also stopped at a members home in Big Bear, the kids in the neighbor hood really liked the cars. Kind of cool to have kids really take notice. Amazing how many cars fit in the driveway!

We split from there with around 12 members going to dinner in Redlands, and the rest of us traveling home. The ride down highway 18 to Victorville was indeed a challenge, the car loved it and if I had done the Willow Springs training class it may have been quicker. Pretty bad when you can go faster than a motorcycle in front of you.

What we saw:
Many cars had some modifications done, many were one of kind:

The largest wheels were 22", the fanciest had the original pontiac indian head on the inside of the rim and the current logo on the spokes, many different types of exhaust systems could be found (magna flow, corvette, custom), lighting: focal HID lighting, LED style tail lights, not to mention all the different trim upgrades.

I have pictures and if you are interested I will email them to those that request them via PM. Leave e-mail address and keep in mind they are large files.

Unfortunately for me, CADREAMIN ran into high winds and blowing debri on the way home. Winds from the Lucerne to Adelanto were severe, with sand out conditions in several locations. The windshield will need to be replaced and more than likely the lights and front bumper cover. Well what can one do other than call the insurance company. Thats why I pay for a 100 dollar deductible.

Thanks to those who participated and made this the event that it was!

I had a great time yesterday and the Big Bear drive was amazing. I didn't even know you could go so fast through those curves.

Thanks for all the good food and hospitality at the home and Saturn dealership. The dinner in San Bernadino was great too. Anybody else get a good sunburn? My brother was cooked in the passenger seat.

I stopped by the Saturn dealership on the way home to pick up my brother's Camaro. I thanked the dealership for the great time while we were there.

The thanks should go to you.

From the sounds of things, everyone had a great time. That is what made this a great event. Big thanks to everyone who participated, in whatever form, you made Sunday a big success. Whether it was Bob & Gale, who opened up their home to us, or Lee who drove with us to the very end, I had a great time with all of you. I look forward to the next time we all get together to have another good time.

BTW - Although we lost and gained people over the course of the day, we had @ 3 dozen paticipants in @ 2 dozen cars. I learned a lot about what will need to be done for future events of this size. Together, we'll make the next time even better.

If anyone wants another place to post photos I'd be happy to set up a page on my website to put them on. (I will reserve the right to approve submissions. We are talking about my business site, after all.)

We do have a photo gallery on the WCKCC web site. It does not have public submission, but drop me a PM, and I'll help you get them posted.

And how did we get our hands on the unreleased springs? How did they handle the road?

I was their guinea pig and as a thanks they gave me production springs They handled wonderfully, I loved how in control the Sol felt when cornering up and down the mountain, I felt so at ease, I also noted how much less I bounced on the road compared to others in the train (they're noticeably stiffer). I had such as a blast!

Wow, Great pictures. Taking the cars on the track must have been so fun. We were able to take parade laps at Laguna Seca last year under very controled speeds. I congradulate the efforts made by the members who have organized this effent. What a great turn out. I wish I could have been there.
I just received my luggage rack in the mail today. Gearing up for a extended stay in Tahoe for the WCKCC meet there June 8-9-10. There is still time to register for this event. Hope to see some of you there.

I bought my rack for the trip to Nashville. It was a difficult install by myself the first time.

If your luggage rack is a Classic Carrier, I suggest two things. (1) Buy a couple of stainless screws that are longer than the ones that come with the carrier. These would be the ones where the two straps on each side are screwed together when mounting the rack on your deck, and (2) Buy a rachet tool with allen wrench heads and a handle that folds 90 degrees.

Trying to attach the rack by yourself with the standard allen wrench and stock screws that comes with the kit by one person is a pretty good way to learn some new epithets.

I found that the longer screws make it easier to fit the clip over the back edge of the deck lid. One other thing I did to help the fit and the looks is to put the forward straps in a vice and put a little twist in each of them so that they conform to the changing angle of the humps.

Now it is pretty easy to install by myself. I open the deck lid, hang the loosely assembled rack from the front of the deck lid, and with all four screws (that hold the rack to the straps) loosened most of the way, slip the rear ends over the deck lid and tighten carefully. Voila!

Have a great time at Tahoe.
