I am looking at taking the wife away for the weekend (15-18 Aug) and heading up to Rapid City, the Bad Lands, and Mt. Rushmore. I plan to drive up on Friday and back on Monday, so will have two days to play around up there. Any ideas on places to see or things to do for two days?
We might make it up to Sturgis and over to Crazy Horse in addition to running trough the Bad Lands and Mt. Rushmore...what am I missing?

I wish I was going, two items Custer State park and Deadwood. I would drive to Mt. Rushmore from Custer State Park. So nice views of it as you drive there.

I just got back from Rapid city and Mount Rushmore. We traveled from there to Yellowstone. I love the Black Hills.

I only wish I was driving the sol. I did travel in comfort in a 2006 Nissan Quest fully loaded with navigation.

(By the way - Deb loves her SOL more than even I imagined!)
Well, I just so happened to have spent the last week on my Harley riding the Black Hills for a week- and here is my 2 cents (saw two SOLS in the mix and they looked great).
(1) Take 79 SOuth from Rapid City and enter Custer Park from the east. Right at the entrance to the park, be looking for a sign that says "Iron Mountain Road" (highway 16A)and take it (on the right). It is a very technical (for motorcycles) mountain road in good condition that has a number of one lane tunnels and 270 degree wraparound turns. The highlight is when you go thoriugh the last tunnel you are looking directly at Mt.. Rushmore - awesome. Stop before the tunnel and get a pic looking through it.
(2) YOu will come to a stop and follow the signs to Mt. Rushmore. frankly - I would bypass stopping there unless you have plenty of time. The history is well documented on the history channel and I recommmend spending the time at Crazy Horse. Go past rushmore and follow the road to where it ends and take a left turn on 385. after only a short distance you have a left turn marked "Needles Highway". If you want to stop for refreshment, there is a nice visitor center just before the Needles Highway at Sylvan Lake.
Take Needles highway and try to pull off at the top and view the spires. BELIEVE the speeds of the turns - there are two at 10 mph that are very difficult to not cross into opposing lane on the 180 degree switchback. Needles highway will dump in to the middle part of Custer Park (watch for game).
(3) Take 16 West to the town of Custer. In the heart of Custer, go back North on 385 to Crazy Horse. ABSOLUTELY go into crazy HOrse and do not miss the 20 minute video of the history. It is incredible. Plus, it has one of the best collections of Indian artifacts around.
(4) When leaving Crazy Horse - go North on 385 and follow the signs to Deadwood. From there, you can take the canyon road to Sturgis or west to 14A, which is Spearfish canyon , another must. Or you can go from Sturgis on the intersstate to Spearfish and pick up Spearfish canyon going to the south.
What I have described would be a FULL day, but more likely a day and a half if you want to stop and enjoy much.
Let me know if you have any questions. I think I'll post some pics from some of these rides.
We love driving through Spearfish Canyon (Hwy 14A) in our Solstice! Make sure to stop at Bridal Veil Falls and Roughlock Falls.
You might also enjoy traveling the Southern Hills (Keystone, Hill City, Custer.) If you go through Hill City stop at the Alpine Inn for lunch, or taste some wine from the Pra. Berry Winery.
Custer State Park has the wildlife loop, Sylvan Lake and Needles Hwy.
No matter where you decide to go, the Black Hills are beautiful. Enjoy!

We did these when we went up there for the 4th of July and it is just a do not miss.
We did all the things listed in Rixtoy1's mesasge. Today we went to Devil's Tower and then continued on up into Montana since I had never been there. Had a nice ride, but the sun was out in force today and we are a little toasty.
I saw KS_Sky in his YLO JKT at Devil's Tower and then again as we exited the park. Counting his Sky we saw 2 in addition to 2 Solstices...one Sky and one Solstice were parked with nobody around and the other Solstice was moving on West I-90.
