Have you heard this one?

I had a Chevy dealer tell me today that they were no longer authorized to perform warranty work on the Solstice. Apparently, there was a "Home office letter" issued on March 18th which sited many models of GM cars that were "Restricted from Crossline Activities". Caddys, Hummers, Saabs, some Buicks, and Solstice were on the list.

Can anyone confirm the truth of this, or was the dealer feeding me a line?

Cross line repairs

Hi!

GM stopped dealers from cross line purchasing in Jan'07 - I know most dealerships will do repair work on any GM product, but when it comes to warranty issues I believe the specific brand has to do the work.

I know Shaw in Calgary doesn't work on Solstices.

But my small dealers outside of the city do.

There is a good reason for this, the Solstice and sky do have unique platforms, and if the mechanic is unfamiliar with the cars they might not lift the car properly on the hoist. I have heard of people having their cars damaged this way.

Also, my local Pontiac dealership told me that only one of their mechanics was trained by GM to do the body panels of the Solstice, so if a door or trunk lid or something was out of line the regular mechanics were not able to deal with it, only one guy there could do the adjustment or repairs.

Odd, Shaw sells them though, McKay on MacLeod services Solstice

That's odd - I bought my Solstice at Shaw and they have been servicing mine. Perhaps this is just if you buy your Sol some where else?

I am going to Shaw tomorrow to check out the recall status of my Sly - I will check this with them. I have to say that they had BETTER service them or they are in for one hell of a stint of bad public relations!

Cheers

I bought my GXP from Airdrie Pontiac, but I get it serviced at Stampede Pontiac because it's on my way to work. I still have to take it in for the differential recall.

Folks,
The issue has to do with restricted crossline activities. If your dealer is an authorized Pontiac dealer, they should be able and willing to service your warranty claims. If they are not certified for Pontiac, they may be able to, but can't, as they won't be compensated.

The purpose of this thread was to bring to light the fact that GM is not acting as one company, but several individual companies. They do this by restricting the activities that each brand can perform.

I'm glad I found this out, as it will prevent me from mistakenly buying a Saab, Saturn, Cadillac or Hummer, as there is no authorized dealer within 40 miles of my home. Without authorization, they cannot work on warranty claims.

So GM - Many of your models just made my "Restricted Vehicle buy list"

I knew that Shaw sold them. I called and they said that they couldn't fix a couple minor things (interior). Maybe I got the wrong person at the dealership????

Miner, it shouldn't matter where we buy our cars. Because if it did, I would be stuck now. I have moved my servicing to another dealer to get the recall work done. The dealer I purchased from wanted to wait until they received notification of the problem.

Which happened 6 weeks after I got my note in the mail. My seal is leaking and I have added oil a few times since I got the car (my dealer added it during a regular service - which I paid for). I also have a growl in the rear end, told the dealer many times and was told "it was normal". We shall see next week what the rear end looks like inside.

My Sly was supposed to go in for the recall work on Thursday but I don't drive it in the snow so I rescheduled to this Tuesday due to the nice little 10 inches we had drop on us Wednesday night.

Shaw is doing the recall work - I did not receive a notice for the recall but I went in and asked. They checked and said that a notice went out to me on January 28th and I guess I never got it. However, as I was on their system to recall, they are going to do the work ASAP. Shaw seems to be very willing to fix any concern I have but then I bought it from them. I have not tried to take it to another dealer at this point so I really cannot comment on what that would be like.

I think if I were getting the service you are getting (NOT!) from your purchase dealer, I would be looking for another dealer too.

Lets hope the recall work gets done properly - good luck and let us know.

Cheers

Miner, I'm still waiting for the seal to come in from the states. Honestly it isn't just my Solstice but the trucks too.

My salesman phoned me last week to ask why I moved, I listed the problems with their service department (wrecked tranny in a truck - their mistake and my money to fix). He still wants to sell me vehicles, not happening. Said no problem with him if I go to another dealer to get work done. I told them a while back there was a problem, they didn't listen.

The local Pontiac dealer called me Friday. Had the parts, did the work, seems fine. Only took them 1 1/2 hrs. The Chev dealer can kiss my butt from here on in.

I had my seal done at Shaw on Tuesday along with the 10,000K. warranty stuff and aligning the rear trunk (it has been a bit off since I bought the car but did not want to waste my time taking it in unless there was something else to do on the car) Everything seems to be fine with it although I am not driving in the snow right now.

Shaw GMC-Hummer went out of their way to accomodate me and my solstice and I have only good things to say about them. By the way, rumour has it that a local Calgary dealer (sounds like Starter ) has about 50 of the seals in stock and is hoarding them.

It is hard to grasp that other people are having so much difficulty with their dealers when mine has been the epitome of service right from the get go. I am very sorry that this is happening to you, Corp Jet and I sincerely hope your new service place is much better for you..

I have an appointment for Wednesday for the pinion seal thing. But I'm going to have to cancel as I do not drive it in the snow. Especially with the GXP summer tires!

I also should get the 10,000 km maintenance done on it as I just passed that just before the snow came back. I take mine to Stampede. They seem very good to me. They installed my SOLO RCD for me.
