I just came back from San Francisco for the Apple World Wide Developers Conference and went to a bar with a couple of friends. A couple of them ordered absinth as they were told that it had just become legal a couple of months ago. Don't know if that's a California thing or not. Anyway, they said it possibly had some hallucinogenic properties so I decided not to have any. I'm just not into that sort of thing. But they seemed pretty ok after having it anyway. It came in a small glass with a separate carafe of water and a sugar cube and if I remember correctly, a knife or some other metal thing with holes in it that they used to put over the opening in the glass. They put the sugar cube on the knife and poured the water over it. The sugar cube melted as the water was poured over it of course and basically diluted the absinth. They said it tasted like licorice flavour.

After that we went to a wine bar and had some wine. I had white wine. I don't remember what kind if was, but it was pretty good. Kind of tasted like a late harvest wine. I just told the bar tender... the sweeter the better

Skins Game

Did anyone catch the skins game Monday, Tuesday? It was at Preditor Ridge up here in Vernon. Freddy Couples, Sergio Garcia, Mike Wier, Greg Norman, Phil Mickleson played around on one of the local courses.

Just thought i'd plug the area to keep the interest up.

Hi Folks,
Here's an update on the winery tour piece. I went to Grey Monk and an adjacent winery called Arrowleaf. Honestly, I didn't even know Arrowleaf existed, as it's been a few years since I was at Grey Monk. The trip was about 70km return to do both wineries from Vernon. This is a great area of lakes and viewpoints, so I think it will make a nice day of photo ops along the way. I think it works with teh Saturday agenda, and hope its not too much driving for y'all.

Grey Monk indicated that August weekend tours may be difficult, as they get crushed with tourists that time of year. They said it's best to keep tour sizes small and to try to arrive early. They wouldn't schedule a "booked" tour on a Saturday for us, but would allow tastings and will tour us (space permitting) on the hour, every hour, along with the regular masses. They were sold out of their acclaimed Oddessy Merlot already.

Arrowleaf was much more accomodating. They indicated they had acommodated several car clubs over the years, with cars up to 75 in number being no problem. They gave me a contact name which I need to book with, but stated it was a formality so they could provide adequate staffing on that day. They have several great whites and the owner was a tad dissapointed when I asked for reds. Nonetheless, he acommodated and I sampled two, and really liked them both. I thought you folks would appreciate this one;

The other wineries I mentioned before are north, and maybe a touch further, so I think this is our best bet.

As always - your thoughts are appreciated.
They have some pretty good whites and the Solstice is a pretty decent red. I was up in Kelowna all last week and there are some great wineries up there. If you stop by Gray Monk, don't forget to buy their Ehrenfelser ice wine since they now have discontinued it.

Hah, oh well...I did see quite a few Solsti and Sky up there. I wish I had mine but at least I got to drive a G6 which has the same 2.4L. Gas at the Shell stations is running $1.52/L for 91 though

Anyways, one other good suggestion is Summerhill and Mt. Boucherie. Mt. Boucherie has a Pinot Noir icewine where they removed the tannins. It pours an amber/pink color and is very good...

Time is our enemy on Saturday though. We have a photo shoot at O'Keefe ranch in north Vernon at 10-11, a Davidson Orchards peach pick around 11:30-12:30 a cruise past the beaches and lakes in Vernon on our way to Grey Monk until around 1:30, two wineries in Winfield - Arrowleaf and Grey Monk, and a BBQ back in Vernon at 4:00 with the car club, and a dusk cruise with them as well, so getting to Kelowna and squeezing in another winery or two would be a trick. If the group wants to forego any of the agenda items, then , sure, we can do that. Alternately, the Sunday return can perhaps accomodate more wineries for those interested.

What says the group?

The itinerary sounds great, love the peach picking! We will be forgoing the winery tours on Saturday afternoon as we don't drink wine, and have our friends in Vernon who may come to the barbeque.

On Sunday we will not be participating in the car show, and will be driving straight home to leave for our vacation!

Ok - I'll plan a "turn around spot" for you on Saturday. You'll probably want to come south a small distance to participate in a photo-op by the lake. If you saw my posted Vernon pics a while ago, you'll recognize the spot. It's maybe 10 mins out of Vernon.

Just wondering about a couple things, (itinerary for Vernon isn't one of them, it's fine btw)

So we are leaving on the Friday bright and early from Langley, we go up the Crowsnest hwy #3 up to Princeton, then we go????

We could do the #3, #3A then #97 north OR the #5A from Princeton to the #97C.

The 3, 3A & 97 takes over 6 hours to Vernon! The 5A and 97C takes 5 and a half hours, and the Coquihalla + 97C would only be about 4 and half hours.

Last question, when we get to King-Oka's place, how many hoses do you have? We might have a whole whack of messy bug covered cars to clean. I'll bring a few of my cleaning supplies but I won't have room for a hose.

I am almost tempted to just do the Coquihalla up to Vernon to save some time, so I can clean off my car decently before the car show thing.

P.S. I got my ticket in the mail the other day.
