In many of the comparison reviews between the Sol and the MX5 the reviewers stated that the Sol could reach 60 in second gear whereas the MX5 needed to be shifted into third.
I hit the requisite 500 miles over the weekend (well 486 seemed close enough) so I nailed it in second and the needle only indicated mid 50's when the limiter came in.
So what's the deal? Is anyone seeing over 60 in second or were the test mules loaned to the journalists differently geared?
Be interested to hear what gear speeds people are seeing throughout the 'box.
The best geared car I have owned was a (European version) '98 VW Golf GTi - 2.0L 16v. That would hit:
There are two reasons your speedometer may not have indicated 60 MPH. There is a little lag built in, and we've discovered that the speedometers err to the slow side by about 5 MPH. Some of us figured out the second one the hard way

As mentioned the speedo is dampened during acceleration. Once you reach constant speed it'll read the correct value. So you can reach 60mph in 2nd gear, but the speedo will never show it while accelerating.
well i did some figuring with an online calculator using the gear ratios and came up with this for top speeds in each gear. i'm not sure how accurate it is.
Gear Redline Limiter Ratio
-I----36.81---37.89---3.75
-II---61------62.88---2.26
-III--100-----103.72--1.37
-IV--138-----142-----1
-V---189-----194-----.73
Final Drive is 3.91 I think.

wow,, it's weird to hear that second only goes to 60 or so.. I don't have my SOL yet,, but my auto colorado hits 47 in first and takes second all the way to about 86.. haha.. I know there's a big difference in the veichles, I was just stating..

Not only a difference in cars but a HUGE difference in auto vs manual configuration. Auto's will always (until I get shot down here) have higher gear speeds than the manual counterparts.
This is one of the reasons 4 speed automatics are still quite common - the gearing is so different from the manual variant.
I think something is wrong with my Sol. I don't know about the accuracy of the speedo, but I get about 20 out of first, and maybe 25-30 out of second. I can go to maybe 50 in third. Anyone have a clue what is limiting the speed in the lower gears?

You need to be more specific/descriptive. How are you being limited, etc? Because if you take it all the way up to the fuel cutoff you should be doing ~60mph in 2nd gear.

I'm going to assume this is a tongue in cheek statement. Based on that assumption, I'm going to say the limiting factor is your right foot.

I believed the speed limiter kicks in at 126 so you will never see redline in forth, and fifth will probably be slower than forth, just not enough ponies to overcome the wind resistant, which you don't have figured into your equasions.

Someone on another thread said that it is possible to reprogram the ECU and disable the limiter. Then again, who wants to go over 129 mph on such a flashy car

Nope, speed limiter is much higher than that. You'll deadhead against aero at around 120 MPH or 125 MPH. Tires can go to 150 +/-, so I'd expect the speed limitation to be 149 - you'll never reach that, though, unless you have a ten mile 16% downgrade with a 15 MPH tailwind.
120-125 is hit in 4TH gear. not enough oomph in 5th.
