It depends on how fast you want to go.
Here in Houston, you move or get moved. There is no middle decision.
The intersections are large enough and the lights are fast enough that you may not make it if you don't get your butt, and car, in gear.
For me, casual driving requires at least 4 grand in each gear. If I want on the highway or to get the car to wake up, it's got to be rung out to near 6 each time.

The question I want to know is:
When you take the motor to redline in each gear, what mph are you goiing in each gear?
Seconly, at that point, what is the rpm when you land in the next gear?

Same here in Jersey. 4k for normal shifting, over 5 for acceleration.

I'm still under 300 miles. I guess I'm not as brave as you all, my RPMs tend to stay at 3k to 3.5k. I haven't even gone over 100mph. 123mph is fast!! When is my car considered broken in? At what miles?

And I always thought for a new car, you have to stay under 70mph to break in the engine. Please correct if I'm wrong. Thanks for all your advise.

IgotSol,
You are doing right, by staying just below 4K RPM, and no more than 70mph, once you reach over 500 miles then you can start to be more aggressive, and do not forget to change your oil some where in between 500 and 1000 miles.
Also for the other members that posted, but my car gets to 60 mph pretty fast just shifting at 4K RPM and most of the traffic is ussually behind me, I never use 5th since most of the time I am already over 55mph and most of the strech of highway here in my home town are 55mph or less.

I love the acceleration of a 6+K shift. My problem is that in PA you can only do it in the first two gears or you are over the interstate speed limit. Usually I shift a 4K for normal driving and 6+K for fun.

per the manual...500 miles is the breakin point...no speeds over 70MPH...no constant speed for highway...after that....go for it...1800 miles on ours....and usually shifting around 3.5-4.0 on the tach....you will find the car responds nicely at the higher RPMs....

I should have read the manual closer. Thought the break in was 1000 miles. I've been holding it to under 4000 RPM till yesterday. Sitting at a stop sign next to a state highway. Looked down at the odometer and it said 996. Close enough to the magic 1000. Told the son sitting next to me, "Watch this" (red necks last words ). Spun the tires pulling onto the highway. Took it to redline. Got a good chirp going into second. Strung pull (but no chirp) at third. He and I were impressed, especially considering the big wheels and tires. Acceleration is a little faster than I thought it'd be. Now the fun begins!
