Just was funny reading this. Once again sorry for laughing
I might add that there is a lot to be said about variety in the sound of car engines.
I agree, a 7 liter V-8 (ie: 427 cubes) in a Ford GT 40 Mark II at Daytona and Sebring had a great sound, a deep roar at redline of 7000 RPM or so. (or even better in my view: the 7 liter Chevrolet in the Chaparral, what a fine car that was).
But I also loved the higher pitched Ferrari P3 with a 3 liter 12 cylinder coming by at 10,000 RPM redline.
And don't forget the Porsche 917 SCREAMING by with a 2 liter 6 cylinder at 14,000 RPM.
You could close your eyes and tell which car was passing by.
Which one sounds best? Sorry, there is no answer to that question.

He is also talking about sound, but there are are a few Vette owners that will get the surprise of their life when one of those Solstice with a Mallett S/C or Hahn Turbo (stage II) will leave them behind.
Not talking about the ZO6's but the normal Vette, track time this summer will let us know.

SO, I'm tossin in my two cents here. I am the one PAYING for the car, the insurance, the gas, and my health insurance / bills!! It is MY DECISION if I want to drive fast on an open road! Does this mean I have the right to risk someone else's life? NO! My own Yes! AND, no car company has the right to lock out my car from doing things I want it to do and that it is capable of doing!!
This is a free country (Yea, right!) So how come we are allowing the government, in the name of "our safety" to keep FORCING decisions on us? They always choose the wrong decision! Laws forcing you to wear a helmet on a motorcycle! BS! I would NEVER ride without one, but I don't have the right to force you to wear it. The solution is simple, if you get in an accident without wearing a helmet your insurance health coverage is VOID!! Call it the stupidity clause. Same for no seatbelts, speeding, or other foolish behavior! BUT, don't try to force me to comply!
Do I drive overly fast consistantly? No. Rarely? Yes
But, I am a trained driver with over a million miles of experience. I am an ex-auto racer and I make sure I know my car before pushing it.
I'll probably never experience the speed cutoff on my Sol (unless it is on a track), but it is still not THEIR right to decide for me!!

Reviewers praise the exhaust. I don't understand why. Sounds like a 4-banger to me...
The only 4's I really like are the boxer motors. For some reason, the STis motor sounds very good. Other than boxers, well I've never heard an I-4 I ever liked the sound of. Give me a V8 with solid-lifters, a radical cam... well, you get the picture.
And I've never heard a V12 that sounded BAD. All of them are sweet, though I've only heard 2 in real life. The rest on TV. Still sound sweet!

easy answer - lawsuits
in todays world of suing everyone for everything (spilled coffee rings a bell) they have to do something to protect themselves. I guess they could set the limits to 70mph but they of course won't go that far.
The first time someones kid borrows his dads sol and takes up to the max and crashes into a minivan full of kids. I guarantee that the car manufacture will be one of the many listed in the lawsuit and expected to assume some responsibility. stupid- yes, but thats the world we live in.
besides, its not to much troube to have it modified.. then when you crash, they will sue you out of house and everything you own for modifing a car out of its manufactured "safe" design.
I'm on your side, but what can you do?
Addressing the original question: Appears you do need a reprogramming, even though the tech says it is programmed for 140 mph. Or there is some other problem. Did he actually check it, or give OEM specs? Something seems abnormal.
Car and Driver (Oct 05 & Dec 05) road test (Solstice vs Miata MX-5) indicated a drag limited speed at 123 mph in 4th gear. 5th is over-geared for the available horsepower. I think the added horsepower achieved with a turbo will result in overcoming the drag enough to reach the programmed max at 140 mph. Incidentally, both issues of Road and Track, comparing the Miata MX-5 to the Solstice, show the Miata's top speed as 131 mph (drag limited).
Road tests from various car and truck mags indicate that some vehicles have the HP to overcome enough drag to achieve higher top speeds than are limited by the program settings. SUV's with large engines, generally could achieve speeds higher than the set limits, but the higher center of gravity makes the manufacturers set lower limits.
My Cavalier Z24 convertible has the limiter set at about 108-110 mph by GM due to the OEM suspension and tires.
The same Cavalier Z24 as a coupe has a speed limit of about 130 mph (drag limited), with a different OEM suspension and higher speed rated tires, which indicates the limiter is programmed for a higher top end. With the right equipment, computer speed-limited vehicles can have the limiter adjusted, although I don't know how it works with OBD II settings.
Waiting for Spring to get my Solstice out of storage and start my own testing.

I agree with both of you guys.
We need to throw out the Lawers and bring back good old "Natural Selection"! By the time this government gets through codling all the dumb-asses all we are going to have is country made up of wimps that can't wipe thier own oil stains. Which the politicians need to get reelected, don't you know?
