I was a bit disappointed to experience the maximum speed was 115mph then the speedometer dropped to zero for a second or two, It was as if the car shut down. what exactly happens to cause that?

It is called a govenor....A governor is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine.

It is a safety thing to keep GM and Pontiac from getting sued because we want to go fast.

what gear were you in? sounds like a problem none the less. mine runs strong up to 6500 rpm in 4th.

maybe you have some loose wires, battery maybe?

umm.. the govenor on my vette just prevented the car from going any faster. Just like the Sol it had an ecu driven speedo. How did the car feel ? Did it go any slower, buck, was your radio still working?

Just prior to the disappointment I was cruising on a somewhat flat road with a few dips and momentarily was airborne, the car felt great though. that occured around 105

What RPM were you at in 4th - it does have a RPM limiter or something like that that stops sending fuel to the car, RPMs shoot down to nothing until you are well below that RPM range (I believe 6,800 RPM, but someone can correct me if I am wrong with the exact RPM) -- I hit it often in 2nd and 3rd gear (I am so used to a V8 and other cars with more pull)

Isn't this pretty much the same as this thread: 60mph in second gear????

Ya, the sunbird I used to have would feel like the engine just died when I hit the speed limiter, then a few seconds later would come back to life.... I think it retards timing, then pulls fuel... not 100% sure though.

In my Grand prix if I hit the speed limiter it just stops accelerating, it holds steady at 126, if I slam on the gas after that I get nothing, it just kind of ignores me.

RPM's were somewhere around 6300-6500 and the radio wasn't on, I was enjoying the sound of the engine too much.

Rev limitor cuts fuel off....

GM has been doing this for years... won't tell you how to get rid of it... cause i don't think that you should be going any faster or that speed period. Unless you live in Europe, and are driving on an autobon....

All your going to do is increase all of our insurance rates..... and loose your license.... at best! What if you loose control and kill yourself and someone/people (note the plural) around you?

Just my $.02

Yo HYPUR!

Cool...

Ive hit the RPM limiter several times at <100mph accelerations and the engine seems to just die. Wonder if you were limited by the speedo or the tach.

Havent gone that high yet though.

PM me Im curious where you did it.

See you at NEO SOS?

And my $.02, there are plenty of people recklessly endangering my life on the highway everyday weaving in and out of rush hour traffic at 65mph to get downtown 10 seconds sooner then the next guy. Speed isnt the issue quite as much as good sense and defensive, courteous
driving.

Hey Fast97, you're probably right? But he's not here to talk about his mischievous behavior. He probably was speeding on a track or a private road. I'm sure he knows the consequences before hand...... On the "Dyno" my car did 135 mph. Any questions about that, PM The Stig, his did the same.

My car on a closed straight track goes 115 relativly easy but dosnt cut out or any speed limiting device just runs out of engine. It has gone on the same track 125 but the conditions were just right. all these numbers are in 4th gear. Slows way down in 5th. dont think the car has a limiting device or if it does its not very repeatable. Just my experience.

I have heard from one of the journalists that wrote about the solstice that on a closed track, they were able to achieve ~120 mph. Sounds like you might have some sort of issue with your car, the speed limiter is set much higher than 125mph, and the car is aero-drag limited to between 120-125 anyways (in 4th gear).
