2008 Tune Now. Wester or BSR?
Member

Join Date: Jul 2008
Hi Guys,

I'm sure many of us with 2008 GXP's are in the same boat. I just don't know which to get, the regular (non-RACE) Wester tune or the 2008 BSR tune. HELP!!!

I see the advantage of Wester as being possibly upgradable to the race tune (IF! it becomes available) and I see the advantage of the BSR tune as not requiring sending out my ECU and probably being stronger right now. I live in Canada so the border issue is a non-issue.

I just ordered the SOLO Mach Shorty + high flow cat and want to go with one of the tunes. From what I have read the BSR tune allows for higher boost then the current Wester tune (remember we're talking 2008). Anyone have a similar setup? What kind of gains did you see from stock?

I spoke with Lyndon and he seems like a really nice guy but I want the most value and HP for my money. He left me with the impression the 2008 race tune wouldn't happen anytime soon (or if it would ever happen).

Comments?

Thanks,
Greg

If you go with the BSR tune I would also add the IC from Hahn Racecraft to give the car the whole output potential.
We do not seem to mentioned RPI in here since he is more into the SKY, however been te same motor etc. you may want to look into his also.
RPI posted he paid a third party to crack the ECM, so his tune have very good numbers also.

I don't plan on making many long runs at WOT, so I doubt the IC will make *that* much of a difference. Is the Hahn IC really that much larger? The Stock IC looks fine to me (at least its well placed) but I havent seen any dynos comparing the two.

Actually, I think the IC is the second biggest gain you can make and dyno proven. It has more to do with flow capability of the bar and plate design than its ability to resist heat soaking.

As did Hahn.

And the Hahn IC is huge compared to the stock one. As was said before me, it's one of the biggest gain items you can get.

Interceptor or not, those are impressive numbers, especially considering you don't have an exhaust/cat listed there! Have you dyno'd your setup? I'll definitely consider the IC to my list after the tune.

There is a dyno 5 minutes from my house but he closes before I can get home, and he isn't open on Saturday or Sunday. He is also a friend and a well known LSX engine builder. I hope to get over there soon.

I like the Magnaflow sound, but I try to keep my mods under the wifey radar and exhaust is a tough one to conceal. I do have a stock cat/down pipe that I purchased used that needs a little, ahemm, "modification" but I will need to disable the catalyst efficiency code via HPTuners first.

I ran a 13.3 @ 101.5 a few weeks ago, but it was 90+ degrees and 90+% humidity. The interceptor run was made on a cool night with low humidity, and I'm certain I can back it up on the track when things cool off a little.

Hahn BSR Tune as far as I'm concerned is the way to. The other thing is if there are any upgrades you will be notified by e-mail...and can the download the upgrade into your BSR.

I am not sure how well the BSR works with aftermarket intercoolers, and there have been issues for some not all with the 2008 and the BSR. I had the non race Westers tune and it made a big difference even with only 18 psi I dyno'd at 267 and about 280 tq, up from about 225. I don't know if RPI has a 2008 tune, his is a complete kit and works very well, exhaust, IC and tune.

lil goat,
Hahn BSR tune is mated to his IC, and the reason for me to make the post.
His IC is the only one tune to the BSR he sells.

To my knowledge, the BSR has only been a problem on one, but very vocal, persons car. And Bill gave him a full refund after working hard to get it to work for him at his request. The only part it seems to be a known problem is the Fujita intake. There are plenty of folks running the BSR, IC, and exhaust with no issues.

The 2008 BSR tune runs 20-23 PSI, so I would bet it's making more power than Westers 18 PSI tune. Now if Westers ever comes out with an 08 hot tune, and you have access to HPTuners, it is half the cost. I took what was available and have been very happy with both my BSR and the service I have receive from our supporting vendor, Hahn Racecraft.
