I was wondering if there are any navigation stereos with XM that are plug-n-play for the GXP. I'd like to get one but I'd like to install it myself so it'd be nice if there are options where I can just pop the dash panel, take out the old, and plug in the new. Anything like that available?
I have been using the Pioneer AVIC series for about six years now and still think it is the best on the market for price, features, ease of use, and reliability.
I have installed two out of the three that I've owned. I would have installed the AVIC Z3 in my '08 Solstice, however, when the dealer included installation at no extra charge, who am I to argue.
For the DIY installation you need to consider some things that you wouldn't ordinarily think of:
There are a minimum of two pieces of hardware to install. The "head" which is the part that installs exactly as the current car radio is installed. Then the "computer" which is a relatively small metal box that houses the electronics for the sensors, and input/output of the optional equipment. Options include the XM radio (each are in their own metal box) the iPod interface, bluetooth cell phone, and a couple A/V inputs for user defined options such as a rear view camera. I found the XM radio module mounted in the trunk near the small light, but haven't a clue where they mounted the other units. They don't take up much room, and the Pioneer folks are very generous with the length of cables.
You can't use the OnStar GPS antenna, so you need to mount the antenna that comes with the AVIC. But that's very simple and takes more time to run the cable than anything else.
A great source for comparison and installation help is found here: AVIC411.com/forum and all the specs for the unit that I've been talking about is here: CLICK
If you want, I can take some digital photos of my install to see if that will help make your decision.

Pioneer AVIC-Z3 Navigation so I can always find my way home after a great day in my Solstice
Wow. Didn't realize it was that involved. Maybe I should change my question to: do you know of a model number and a place I can search to see if there's a (good) installer in my area?
Would have to argue the point about the Pioneer AVIC--worst navigation I have ever had. So bad I do not even use it--use my portable Garmin NUVI for Nav and use the Pioneer for all the sound functions which are good although it does not allow you to use the iPod video like some others head units like the Kenwood.

I'd be interested in some of the specifics (about what you don't like) if you have the time. I already have a Garmin Nuvi in the car but I keep it hidden in the glove box and it's just a bit of a pain to take it out, turn it on, wait for it to boot, etc. The "where to" thing where you can look up destinations like "Best Buy" or "PetSmart", etc. is so slow it is totally unusable. It'll take it 15 minutes to come up with one hit and it's a PetSmart in Plano Texas 1014 miles from you.

Where to begin. First of all, to me, the Garmin interface is the most user friendly on the market. Have had a Magellan and Tom, Tom. There is a reason why the reviews always put the Garmin on top.
The Pioneer is not intuitive, the directions were often wrong--giving me a longer route than necessary. Have the Nav Traffic funtion and it seems to be a waste of the monthly fee. Once you use a Garmin you are spoiled. That is why I am changing out my Pioneer for a Kenwood, plus the fact the screen on my Pioneer has gone out. The Kenwood also allows you to view your iPod video as well where the Pioneer does not--possibly other Pioneer models than mine do but not all that sold on the one I have. Great sound function but again want an all in one unit. Will be going with the more expensive Kenwood where it uses Garmin for the Nav function and has built in Bluetooth.

$2,800........ouch! Although you can more than likely buy this unit for less than what Crutchfield is asking but still that is a lot of coin for just a head unit. Do you want to surf the net while driving?

Never heard of the Azentek CPC-1000 until I saw this thread. I did a little search and found this video on YouTube. Apparently someone has already installed a CPC-1000 in a Pontiac Solstice. Check it out:

Now that's High-Tech...and since I'm in the Tech field... I could see where if I was traveling a lot again, this would be really usefull, but after watching the video, I think a Nav\receiver with blutooth would work just fine.

Just curious, not trying to get into a debate. Russsims, could you tell me the model number AVIC you have?
I agree that other models I havd used did have issues with the route directions, but the updates that came later fixed those issues. Also, there was a thread on the AVIC411 forum not too long ago that certain models had a known issue with the screen going black, but Pioneer replaced the complete unit at no charge.
Really, I'm not trying to sell anyone on the AVIC - it's just my preference that's all. The Z3 in my Sol does everything I ask of it and then some. Not to mention playing a DVD movie on those long trips. ((of course I NEVER watch a movie while driving, I let the passenger watch and I listen)).
The one really big bummer I will say is the crappy way Pioneer handles importing CD music to their HDD. You must play the CD real time all the way through to have it record to the hard disc. There is no faster way, so why bother. I got the iPod input and now have 6000+ songs at my fingertips.

Pioneer AVIC-Z3 Navigation so I can always find my way home after a great day in my Solstice
The navigation on the AVIC systems definitely take some getting used to. It's not perfect, but it's not completely useless either. You will get to your destination (eventually). I have not had many problems traveling around central NJ, DE and MD. NY and especially NYC had some issues.
The issues with the iPod video is related to Apples change of the iPod design. Early 5 generation iPods will work just fine. Mine plays video without any problems (videos do NOT work with my iPhone though).
If you haven't seen it yet, check out my signature for the installation of my AVIC D3. It's not that hard if you know how to hook up stereo gear.
