It was late last night and I was tired and still had a one hour drive ahead of me. I was almost on empty and the fuel light had just come on. I saw a Shell station with regular for $2.67 and pulled in.
It wasn't until I was about to pull away from the gas station that I realized that I had just put reglar 87 octane in my GXP. DOH! I wasn't even thinking. I must have thought I was driving one of my other cars.
Remember, the owner's manual says 87 octane is okay, but 91 is recommended for optimum performance.
So the car's ECM should be able to compensate for any knocking caused by the 87 otcane. But it may take a few tanks of premium for it to readjust back to the higher performing settings.
I'm sure one tankful won't cause any permanent damage, just a possible small drop in performance until you run enough premium through it.

Go to the auto parts store, buy a bottle of octane booster and put it in! Problem solved.
We did this on a trip where we knew the highest octane was 90 and had NO problems!
I remember that trip was the Lubbock run. Highest gas grade we could find in the land of the diesel trucks and farm equipment.

You'll have more than just a small drop in performance. Knock sensors tend to be on the Nazi side to protect the engine.

Everything is relative, of course. I've never done this, so I can't really say what the actual drop in performance would be. But it shouldn't harm the engine, throw a code, or put you into limp mode.
Perhaps mcurrier can tell us if he noticed any considerable drop in performance after he filled up with 87.

Do you think I'll have any problems from it?
Siphon out the remaining gas and filler up with 93, that is, unless you already burned through the full tank.

Automatic, AC, Leather Seating, 6 CD Changer, Monsoon sound, XM radio, Sport Metallic Pedals, did I mention Automatic.
Since my better half doesn't drive stick ... tis better to get an automatic GXP than no GXP at all.
Don't put octane booster in the tank..(not recommended)
Just get to a half a tank and fill it up with high test gas..
You'll be fine.. I would suggest that you probably set the octane ratings in the pcm to low octane rating... and lost about 10 hp till the next time you fill up.
We've all done something similiar at one time or another..
Todays electronics are excellent.. they protect these engines in microseconds.. and readjust when the correct fuel is put into the tank..
Just don't look for those 10 extra ponies till you go back to full tanks of high test gas..
If it really bugs you, just keep filling it back up each day. Every gallon of 93 added to your 87 gets you just that much closer to the recommended 91.

I was looking for that. Thanks. And .5 second in 0-60 translates around a 20hp or so reduction in power.
