I tried a search but still came up unclear: do 08's need the same recall? Are there any recalls for 08's?

Thanks,
Mike

No 2008s for the just announced Pinion Seal Recall, only certain 2006-2007 Solstices.

Recall Drive Axle Seal Leak-Replace Seal 2/1/08

There was a very small recall early in the model year for 2008 Kappas. Here is the thread from that one:
9/24/07 2008 Solstice/Sky 555 car recall

The Dealer I bought my car from called me yesterday to schedule the work! It's going in on Monday. I'm not having the leaking but am having the recall work done just in case.

SD,
I just read the
"Recall Drive Axle Seal Leak-Replace Seal 2/1/08"
thread.

It is unclear to me if the dealer is
going to completely replace the diff fluid.

Could you clarify please ?

Yes, they completely replace the differential fluid.

It is one of the areas of the recall and procedure that is unclear.

The recall, as has past service information, talks about the importance of keeping the pinion bore free of fluid. Fluid that could give the perception of a repeat failure.

It does not require, or list it, it as one of the steps in performing the seal replacement. The parts information lists the required fluid and additive, but the payment section makes no reference to it.

But, it does go a one step beyond though and states "It may be necessary to drain some or all of the axle fluid...".

It would appear it is up to the dealership or their tech, on what to do.

With out further guidence from GM, or dealerships getting claims bounced for excessive parts allowances, my recommendation would be to request that the procedure be done with a full drain and refill. Also request that they read the latest service procedures in the electronic version of the service manual, use all the proper special service tools, lift it carefully, and use the additive if required.

Took mine in this morning for an appointment that they forgot to write down on the book. (Can you feel the confidence builder already?)

Service guy goes and gets my VIN off the car, punches it in to the system and says there is not a recall...his boss looks over his shoulder and says, "Hey, thats for a G6." Types in the correct number the second time and it shows the recall. (Confidence shot #2)

About an hour later I get a call that says the Boss says the recall is only if they see or we experience leaks. (Confidence shot #3)

I asked them to check again since that what I am reading tells me that they can't give me back my car until it is fixed because it is in their possession.

I just got off the phone with the Service Manager and he said that the system does not show it as a recall for the pinion seal replacement...he said that it is worded that it is to be replaced only if leaking. He did call the Area Manager and was told that it is in fact a recall and that they are to repair my car. (Confidence restored)

He also said that the parts are listed as out of stock in the warehouse in Wisconsin. They called the warehouse and were told that they received 4,500 of the seal kits yesterday and would start fililng orders today, so hopefully they will get my part tomorrow.

It gets even better...the Service Manager bought his wife a Solstice for Christmas and had been checking for the recall for her car. Now he can get hers fixed too.

Bottom-line is don't let them tell you there is no recall, ask them to go up the chain to get the correct information to not only help you but to help customers that follow you in the door.

And last, Small Dealer you are great! Thank you for keeping us informed as it really helped me keep my cool when dealing with this situation today.
