It detects when the vehicle is out of control and applies the brake on individual wheels to bring the car straight again. It defaults "On" at every start up, although i believe the button allows you go go into 'Competition Mode' and full off.

What pieces are different: You get added sensors and a differenet ABS module.

Advantages of it: You can push the car harder with the added safety net of ESC. (If you're into track days) And if you drive it in the rain, slush, snow, etc you will have better control of the vehicle.

Our MINIS have DSC, dynamic stablization control. We cut it off when autoxing and when we just basically don't want any help, like running The Dragon. I always cut it off if I want to show my ass at a traffic light when flooring it. If you do not cut if off then, you will get what feels like a stall after about 50 feet or so...that's the control kicking in with the brakes

It is great on wet days.

I have a Bonneville SSEi with Stabilitrac. It comes with an on/off button standard. I'd not say Stabilitrac can deal with a car that is out of control. It's not magic. By using the wheel spin sensors associated with anti lock brakes, the system is able to adjust the engine power and apply the brakes on a specific wheel in order to adjust your yaw angle. That's about it.

But I'm an old school guy who enjoys driving my cars within their envelopes. To me, not engaging the anti lock brakes indicates I've correctly judged the conditions. So it is doubtful that I give stabilitrac much to do outside extreme conditions. I have noticed those lovely wide tires tend to float on snow, at which time stabilitrac becomes a trusted friend delivering my wife safely to work.

I have a GXP on order. I also own a 1973 MGB. It is likely that stabilitrac on the GXP will have to be turned off from time to time as I have a habit for four wheel drifting the MG through the twists of country roads and stabilitrac is not going to allow that kind of horsing around.

Enjoy

NA Solstice does not have StabiliTrak, even as an option. So no, you don't.

That's traction control. (Unless you're sideways) Competition Mode gets rid of traction control, but you still have the safety net of ESC. I'm you drive just right you can hold it a the edge of brake activation and drift slightly. (depending on the car)
