G-Series was conceived by Pontiac for naming all their vehicles.
G6
G8
That simply doesn't apply with some models: Vibe, Solstice, etc. Maybe it was a poorly hatched idea and they don't plan to continue, or they will make the changes in the future years to come.

let's step back a bit

ORIGINALLY

the "G" designation was assigned by the europeans
as in GTO (Gran turismo omologato)..below from wikipedia

Gran Turismo Omologato, a model name used on several automobiles:
Ferrari 250 GTO
Ferrari 288 GTO
Pontiac GTO
Mitsubishi Galant GTO
Mitsubishi GTO

then GT became simply Gran turismo (or grand touring)

so originally GXP would have come off as
Gran Xtra (or extreme) Performance

but you are right that GM has rebadged all pontiacs with a "G" Designation

G5 (formerly Grand Am)
G6 (formerly Grand Prix)
G8 (formerly Bonneville)

GM is merely doing what ford and Mercedes have been doing for a few years which
is a shift away from NAMES....to simple Alpha-codes

hope this clears things up a bit

I could see the G series referring to the new designation, except it becomes a bit redundant on the G6 GXP. (Is it the gee series six gee series extra etc etc...)

Gran as in GT makes sense, and was sort of what I would have guessed it would be.

Didn't mean Ford specifically ...but Ford Motor Corp.

specifically Lincoln has moved away from names to alpha-codes

like MKS & MKZ instead of Zephyr or Mark-series

hope this clears it up a bit
