If this is just for "looks", I like the idea behinds it, but being it is only for "looks" why not follow the curves of the car.
Just my 2 cents.
Simple we don't want it to look like a Miata, thank you very much!

I do have a few concerns, esp if we were to bolt our harnesses to this bar. The plate that the main flange is bolted to is the same GM composite/plastic. Underneat that is a flimsy, maybe 2mm thick bracket. The composite piece is sturdy and sounds solid when you knock on it but those break real easily. The firewall is pretty thick though. Have you guys though about extending the center towards the firewall so you can bolt it to something with better structural rigidity?

I dont understand completley, but this is NOT in any way bolted to composite plastic., all the mounting points tie into either the seatbelt throughbolt points, or tabs onto the chassis that are supports for the convertible top

Good product and for all those with disappointments i say it is better than any of the other options.......OH WAIT THERE ARE NO OTHER OPTIONS! so if you don't want to build it then take it for what it is worth (500ish$)

That was the idea on the bar I have been working on. Like I said I have a cardboard pattern and I took it in to a fabricator for an estimate. The design (to give a quick mental picture) the bars came up through the silver trim peice between the humps, takes an outward bend and folows the hump lines up the insides about 3/4" of the panels, takes another outward bend to a parralel position as it reaches the tops of the humps and out past towards where the top bars would be in the up position then curve back over themselves to a meeting point in the center similar to the top line of the RMR bar low enough to clear the top. Here is a god aweful microsoft paint drawing I just threw together real quick a five year old could have done better.
There are two problems with it:
1. As is with the RMR bar (which I really like by the way guys) good sub frame support for max safety.
2. The guy at the fab shop said it would take an extreme amount of time (AKA LABOR COST) to do all the slight bends and would call for lots of small bend cuts and welded together to make such a small turn radius bend on the outer ends.
End result over a thousand dollars just for the prototype.
So the pattern sits and may get junked though I may try it on my own just because but the actual pattern makes for a nice looking bar that follows the curves IMO.
The real reason I want a bar in there is to mount a camera on. Holding one up while driving on the club runs is a killer on the arm and not as safe either.

I want to make fun of your drawing but I look at the picture for your avitar and I am humbled......
Engineering goes into everything we do, we did not just pick up two pieces of metal and weld them together to make you a harness bar, I understand this is not the toughest it could be. But keeping the convertible top, with the bar, this is what we came up with. It wont be for everybody. If we wanted to tie this into the sub frame, and make it a full roll bar, and not a style bar, you would no longer have your convertible top, and major modification to the car would have to be done custom, every time
So many Sol owners are so hungry for a roll bar that will allow their participation in SCCA sanctioned events, they grasp and become impatient for any solution that looks to come close. All these naysayer questions and negative comments are regrettable. I've heard that, to a certain extent, approval of this bar rests with the discretion of the SCCA inspector at each local event. I hoping for all Sol racers, and me, that the RMM design will pass SCCA muster.
RMM is not far from where I live. I intend to visit RMR's shop later this week and see for myself just how safe the 'style bar' looks top be. If I see what I expect to see, I will buy one (bare metal, to be painted Mysterious black). It has to be safer than nothing for the street and other non-SCCA events, and if it gets SCCA approval, hooray for RMR and me.
To the naysayers, it would be nice for them to just back off and design their own SCCA compliant roll bar and maybe even give RMR a bit of credit for attempting to tackle a problem we all want a solution for.
