Fixing scratches on the Aluminum Polished rims

Thought I'd post this here as well.

Does anyone have tips on how to fix small nicks on the polished aluminum rims.

Can I use some very fine (600 grit or similar) to smooth the nicks, then polish with rubbing compound?
Do I have to clearcoat the are afterwards?

Do Notuse sandpaper on your wheels, besides 600 grit is not fine, 2500 is what I call fine. Stick with a aluminum polish, it has enough grit to polish fine scratches without worrying about damaging the wheels. gary

Polished wheels

My wife scratched 2 rims on a curb - the wheels are not truly polished - they are coated - when you scratch them you remove the "coating". They wanted $500 to recoat and refinish my two rims. We bought aftermarket instead. I still have one unscratched rim if someone needs one. $150 + shipping.

Brian; I sent you a PM. Please respond when you have a couple of minutes. I will not be able to get my emails from about 7:00 AM Saturday until about 12:00 Noon on Monday. I will be at the races at Talladega this weekend. (GO Jr) Thank You, David Cody

I'll admit to being a little irritated at this. GM advertises these rims as "Polished", not "Polished appearance". The rims on my Viper are polished, and only cost $150 to be repaired at Wheels America. That is for a rim badly road rashed, where they have to weld aluminum back onto the rim then polish it. So, are you saying that the Solstice polished rims are just regular aluminum that they spray a paint on that looks like a polished surface?

No. The polished rims are polished. It sounds like you have the painted. I'd like to see a picture.

Ok. So, is there a way to fix the minor scratches on my rims?
They are polished aluminum.

Gary says to use aluminum polish!! I've been told if you go to a truck stop that has a truck wash service they will polish each wheel for around $6 each. This might be a place to start.

I assume the polished rims are clear coated. Otherwise, they would oxidise regularly like the old cheap rims from the 70's that you had to polish all the time. If they are clear coated, you have to be careful how you treat them....
