I'm about to try something crazy and buy some NEW R-compound tires for autocross. So far this season and all of last year I've run on used Hoosiers -- they're way stickier than the Azenis I used two seasons ago to start my autocross career. Now I think my skills/addiction have progressed to the point where I can justify spending the money for NEW tires. But ever the tightwad, I am looking at the BF Goodrich R-1 as it is several dollars less than the Kuhmo 710 or the Hoosier A-6. Anybody have any first-hand experience with the R-1s?

No first hand experience but I just bought a used set for my Camaro. The fellow I bought them from, a NASA racer, made the special effort to advise me that they need a couple of laps to get heat in them before they start to really grip. That tells me it's definitely not a tire for autoX.

Those used to be the the hot ticket in the mid nineties. There were two compounds for R1s back then, one for Club Racing and a much softer one for AX. dunno it that is true now, but before you order, you need to find out if so. I used to buy them directly from TeamTA which offered both compounds.

I saw those listed and thought "woo hoo". They were great back in the 90's, as was said. BFG actually had a "Team T/A" which was pretty cool too. I remember carring aroung the little card with suggestions on how to correct under and oversteer with pressures and such. It was a good reference tool. I don't know too much about the new stuff though and haven't heard of any first hand experience yet. I'm eagerly awaiting some feedback though.
