I decided to look into various cheap tires after the Riken Raptor ZR thread. LV had pointed out the Nexen N3000 before which is also a cheap tire in our stock size. I've found 6 Summer only tires that can be had for under $115 each online. I don't know if any of these tires are good or how they compare to the highly rated Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, or Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position performance wise, but I can tell you some of these cost half as much as the cheapest of those three. Prices are from various places all easily found on google.
  • Federal - 595 (SS595)
  • GT Radial - CHAMPIRO 328
  • Hankook - Ventus Sport K104
  • Nankang - NS-II
  • Nexen - N3000
  • Riken - Raptor ZR

High Performance All-Season

Riken is introducing the Riken Raptor ZR tire, a new line of ultra-high performance (UHP) tires that are initially being introduced for Michelin's Alliance dealers. The new tire combines cutting-edge looks with high-performance design and construction designed to appeal to consumers looking for a high-quality performance tire at an affordable price.
Initially, Riken will be introducing 27 sizes in the Raptor ZR line to the company's Alliance dealers on June 1, 2005 ranging from 16 to 18 inch dimensions (eight 16-inch, twelve 17-inch and seven 18-inch sizes). Following early in July 2005 will be two 20-inch sizes. When fully introduced, the Raptor ZR line will cover 78 percent of the UHP marketplace. The new tire is designed to compete in performance and price with other lower tier UHP tires including Toyo/Nitto, Kumho, Falken, Hankook and Cooper.
"This tire line is designed to provide our dealers with a tire that will deliver the right performance at the right price for the consumer looking to customize and improve the look and performance of their vehicle," said Thom Peebles, brand director Riken Tires. "This is a significant step for Riken as we are introducing the deepest UHP line in the brand's history and we won't stop there. We will continue to build Riken by introducing new sizes and new lines to provide our customers with the product they need to capitalize on the profitable lower price tier of the UHP market".
Riken Raptor ZR Tire Features:
  • - Directional tread design formulated using advance computed-aided design software combined with extensive laboratory and track testing.
  • - W speed rating.
  • - A "waved" center rib to help channel water away from the footprint, while providing additional support, on-center steering feel, responsiveness and overall traction.
  • - Oversized swept-back lateral rib elements designed to maximize grip during cornering.
  • - Specially-designed material and rubber compounds to help the tire maintain its shape and deliver added progressivity feeling to the driver in both high- and low-speed driving situations.
Riken tires are designed to deliver ultra-high performance at an affordable price. Featuring the Riken Raptor ZR ultra-high performance tire, Riken tires are sold at select dealers and locations throughout the United States.

I gotta tell you that when the stock tires on my NA Solstice need replacing this will get a serious look. Tread pattern looks much more rain friendly then the RSA ... or is it just me?

brentil,

Nice work on collecting the data. I hate these stock all season tires, and have been wondering about these exact same tires.

I hope we get quite a few to weigh in on this, because I'm anxiously waiting to pull the trigger on something good and cheap.

I think this is an excellent idea a place where we can get feedback on some of the more affordable tires out there.

Here is a link to a tyre test site that has some info on a few of the tires mentioned here so far.

http://www.tyretest.com/

The Riken Raptor gets the nod for best test but I still want to point out the country of orgin of these tires is Indonesia. Riken is a sub brand of Michelin so that adds some credence to them.

The best bang for the buck right now would be the Dunlop Sport Max at Tire Rack for 124.00 that tire gets rave reviews from just about everyone.

Of the very budget tires I have found quite a few good reviews on the Nexus N 3000 at several different web sites at this point I would most likely try them when its time to retire.

You can't tell a lot by looking at the tread pattern.

Take a look at the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position vs. the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. Both are Max Performance Summer tires. You can do a detailed comparison online at the Tire Rack Web site.

Both are very highly rated for wet and dry traction and anti-hydroplaning, yet they look nothing like each other. You can find tires that have tread patterns that closely resemble the tread patterns of each of these tires, yet which aren't even in the same league when it comes to performance.

When you think about it, the superficial appearance of a tire's tread pattern is the easiest thing to imitate, so the resemblance is probably not a coincidence, it's just their attempt to make people think the tire will perform similarly to the one they're imitating. Don't fall for it.

Does this car have a limited-slip rear end by any chance?

Good idea. I went in and added links to their review pages for each tire.

A friend just put a pair of Riken - Raptor's on his BMW M5 over the weekend. So far he is extremely happy, much better grip than the expensive tires he had. Although he doesnt know about the rain performance yet.

I think this will end up tipping the scales for me towards the Riken
