OK as these tires ARE available and I want new tires what does everyone think of these as an option?
Well, as Miles mentioned, they are a little bigger in overall diameter than the OEM tires (27" vs. 26.6"). They are not, however, any bigger in diameter than the OEM sized GS-D3s, but they are a couple of pounds heavier (and that's unsprung weight). Surprisingly, both tires have the same tread width.
Only you know what's really important to you, but I think if you'd be happy with the 245/45-18 GS-D3, I think you'll be equally happy with the 255/45-18 GS-D3. My only suggestion would be that you also consider the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position. It costs less and has a slightly wider tread than the GoodYear, and it compares favorably in terms of performance.
I would encourage you to go to the TireRack site and look at the specs and the test results and weigh the numbers for yourself.

I am just not a Bridgestone fan, I am sure they are a great tire, but as this car is beautiful I would choose the Goodyear on the basis of looks alone if all other things were equal. The added weight is of at least some concern and I can't figure why they would weigh that much more as they are only slightly wider. I will revist Tire Rack and compare AGAIN.

The only thing I can think of, other the minimal .2" increase in sidewall height, is that the 255 has a Y (186mph) speed rating and the 245 is W(168mph), thus the 255 is a stronger tire.

Miles can sell you some nice, lightweight wheels that will more than compensate for the weight of the tires.

Be careful. Don't hang your hat totally on contact patch. .
Well of course I wouldn't. I am not stupid. I know my hat would get dirty and squashed, if I hung it totally on the contact patch. Plus, I would either have to back up or pull forward to get it under there.
Yes, I realize it is not that simple, I am trying break a complex subject into smaller, understandable bites.
Thank you for the additional expansion on the subject. As I said in an earlier post, I am not an engineer. If fact, I haven't even played one on TV.

'Coming out of the corner hotter" - all cars use the same technique, you must have the front and rear going straight when the foot is on the floor, what that article meant was the GXP could turn a better apex get straight quicker and then use the turbo to accelerate out of the corner. Coming in hotter means little if you cannot get the car pointed straight quicker.
I think hotter was the wrong term to use for going in. I believe they were saying that they could brake later, going in with the Boxster.
I am sure you are right about coming out ( no pun intended). But I was thinking about getting a little oversteer going as one came out with the addition torque that the GXP is capable of producing at lower rpm and quicker than the Boxster.

This may be old news, but I heard today that Goodyear had recently settled a labor dispute. This might have some impact on the availability of the GS-D3s.

It probably has to do with NAIAS coming soon, GM probably bought every single one to put on their show cars...

Good one Brentil .
Goodyear may have settled their dispute but they have a huge backorder list across their entire line of tires. Even if our 245/45R18's are in the first production run (which is yet to be scheduled) we won't see them here for 60 days or so.

Reason: Spelling. Saturday mornings and spelling usually don't agree with one another.

Still, it's light at the end of the tunnel. If you're waiting for Goodyear summer tires, they might just be available by summer. I'm completely satisfied with my Bridgestones, but if somebody has their heart set on Goodyears, the availability problems aren't indefinite.

Why not look at the Michielin Pilot Sport 2's. They are very nice.
