Both tires should perform pretty badly in cold weather (anything below 45 degrees). From my personal experience the RE-01R will still perform OK on dry surfaces in cold weather but you get into the ABS easier, the tires will spin easier, and you can't corner as quickly. In the wet it is just a little slicker and it doesn't really provide any traction in the snow.
From what some of our fellow forum members have said here the GS-2 will actually go in snow OK. It's not something I have tested so I can't verify it. I'm sure that the tires dry and wet capabilities will be diminished in temps below 45 degrees though, (it happens to all tires except winter tires).
As far as head to head wet performance I would put my money on the RE-01R. At full tread depth it still performs very very well in the rain. Given the GS-2's acceptable performance in snow leads me to believe that it had made some compromises in ultimate grip.
I think the only time anyone will get to do head to head comparisons on the RE-01R vs the GS-2 vs the GS-D3 vs the RE050A PP will be at Nationals. But I already have my suspicions on what would happen in that race.
