   Tires 255/40/18 ?
Member

Join Date: Oct 2005
I am thinking of changing the stock tires to the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 (255/40/18). While Tirerack lists this tire as an alternative for the Solstice, I would like to be sure before I order. I did the calculations and measurements and it appears to be all right. Any comments? Thanks.

They are not all that difference in size than the base tires, so I would assume you would have no problem with them on the car as far as running into rubbing issues. I haven't seen any reports of anyone trying an alternate sized tire yet, so I cannot really comment on handling differences and effects of going to that size.

It looks like a pretty good tire for only $163 each.

Have you considered the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3? They're $194 each.

While the BFG beats the G slightly in dry cornering, dry traction, and dry steering response, the G wins all the other categories. The G excels significantly in Hydroplaning resistance, Wet Traction, and Comfort, and stomps the BFG on Noise (BFG is makes a lot of noise).

My girlfriend had noisy tires on her Mustang. When we put new ones on last year, I got a set that are SO much quieter, you wouldn't believe!

I'll be going with the Goodyears when I get new ones.

And jccalvin, you gave no indication of where you live.

I'm sure you understand that NEITHER the BFG nor the Goodyears should EVER be driven on snow. These are summer tires only.

The tires that came with my Solstice are the standard Goodyear RSAs. I have to say I am not impressed. In my opinion, they don't 'stear' very well. I have the Bridgestone Potenza 750s on another car and they provide the improved stearing I am refering to. I looked at the Goodyear but I don't think they offer a 255/40. I think it is a 255/35. I'm sure it is a good tire, but they are a bit pricey for me. Thanks for the reply.

I agree, the RSAs are mediocre. Pontiac uses them because they are acceptable for snow. But the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 are absolutely incredible, as I said in a prior post. Superior to the BFGs in most categories, and close in the other three. And BOTH tires are much much better than the RSAs. The Goodyears come in the same size as the RSAs, 245/45-18.

So, may I ask your VIN last 4 digits, color of Solstice, and date Delivered To Customer? It's for THE LIST. Thanks.

Geometry calculations:
change in ride height: -8.3 mm
tire height: - 16.5 mm
rolling diameter: -51.8 mm
change in drive ratio: -2.4%
actual speed when showing 55 mph: 53.7 mph

If you went with a 255/45 you only gain 9 mm in height with a change in drive ratio of 1.3%. You also get a little more pothole protection if you get my drift.

I have the GoodYear Eagles F1's GS-D3 and that tire is by far a much better tire than the original RSA, this tire is also number 1 in the comparison test at tire rack, also do not forget to run the psi at 29 for this car, very important.

You people in Florida are pretty smart on your tires!

Graybird over in Port Charlotte got his RSAs exchanged for the GS-D3s when he first got his car. He needs to check in with his evaluation.

WARNING !!!

You change the aspect ratio and you change your ride

Your RSA's are matched to your car....they have a harmonic dot and are balanced and tuned to your car.

You put a different tire on your car...you will N O T get the same ride

You have been warned.....proceed at your own risk !!!

Tirerack.com shows the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s far superior to the best Avon. I don't know who P-Zero is.

Does anyone know of a good source for definitive comparisons between various tires? Tirerack.com is only putting customer opinions into numerical values, and you know what they say about opinions!

So I would like to find a site that actually has road test results on various tires to compare statistics.
