I am getting exhaust fumes in the cabin of my GPX, and at times it is just uncomfortable. There are days when there is no smell at all, but there are times when it makes my eyes water.
Yesterday we drove about 150 miles and had the issue (top down) only when going up long hills at 60- 65 mph in 5th... almost as if it was "loading up" and venting. Today, I was just gassed driving around town. At first, I had the top up with both windows about half down and then I put the windows up, turned on the A/C and switched to recirculate. After a minute or two with the A/C on, the smell started coming in.
-I've got over 1400 miles on 'er so it shouldn't be anything burning off.
-It's definitely exhaust... smells something like propane, not natural gas, rubber, oil etc.
-I have popped the hood immediately after driving and can smell nothing under there.
-It happens under normal driving and when I'm getting on it.
-The dealer had it for two days and couldn't smell anything (it doesn't happen all of the time) and got no readings on their carbon monoxide detector.
Is there some sort of vent in the system that may be malfunctioning?
I did search the forums, but there are no current threads and in the ones I found there was no solution/answer to the problem.
Anyway, any new info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

It past discussions in 2006 and 2007, it has come up that rear differential fluid can also have that Hydrogen Sulfide-Rotten Eggs-Natural Gas-Propane type of smell.
May be fluid venting out of the rear differential under certain driving conditions, and buring off.
Add that to the list of things to be inspected under the car.
If the dealership checked the car by running it, and not driving it, this might not have presented.

It could be an exhaust leak. I had that when my headers cracked, although I am running solo headers if your stock it might not be the case.
Everything is stock.

The dealership first just ran it in the shop, then they drove it on two separate days. Nothing ever seems to happen when you take it to the dealer lol.

I'm having this same problem right now. I'm @ 3100miles -plan on having the dealer look at in the next week. Happens during hard throttle in fourth/fifth gear and sometimes going up hill.

The rarely mentioned second part of that law is that "Quickest way to get a car to break down is to sell it".

Sometimes I believe the dealers, especially the service managers, are trained to deny the existence of any condition that might cost them money to fix.

Take of your turbo cover and see if there is any black soot on the inside or on the engine. You cabin air intake is just above the cat, if there is a exhaust leak there, you sill smell it.

Unfortunately no one employs mechanics any more, everyone hires technichians. Techs follow the book to trouble shoot a vehicle if it passes the steps it is fine even if it doesn't work.
A mechanic on the other hand goes beyond the book and actually digs into the car to find out what is wrong. Dealers can afford mechanics.

I tend to agree with you on one level. However, with a son-in-law who is nearing his certification as a Master Technician (Toyota), I must take small issue.
_Good_ technicians know enough mechanics for the cars they service that they can and do go beyond "the book" and look at the actual machine in front of them, digging below the surface to find the root issue. Unfortunately, it appears such folks are becoming the (all too rare) exception.
