I am also considering a CAI as well, but I don't like the one offered by GM. When I had my Z3, the after market CAI's had a heat shield. I was surprised to see that GMs version did not have a heat shield.
I am happy to see DDMWorks has come out with a CAI with a heat shield. That is the one I am leaning towards.
DDMWorks - LNF Air Intake System - AIS
I am no expert on the subject though.

It does has a shield. The one I took off. I believe most of the aftermarket add the shields simply to comply with California regulations that require the filter to be covered.
I appreciate DDM's direction. It makes more sense than the typical answer of extended piping in the hunt for cool air. Nice short and straightish pipe with the ability to open the tube around the maf for later calibration. Sounds like a great part.
I'd like to coment on the cold air induction topic.
I used to work for a company that made intakes. Time and again we were shown that the shortest possible intake gave the best possible performance. While this didn't always produce higher peak power, the cars definately drove with better responce. However, I have witnessed cars idling for extended times with intakes just over the exhaust stumble on launch.
I am convinced the introduction of the extended CAI was an effort to justify intake prices doubling and profits thus. Surely cool air is a reasonable expectation. I would warn about considering it as the defining factor for your decision.
Anyway, that's part of my take on things
I still apprecaite my intake. I do have a certain buyers remorse regarding it. Since there is no tangible power gain, I might have spent the money wiser. It really does look pretty in my engine bay with my other polished pipes. The sound completes the obnoxious image that I like to portray. At least I figure the whoosh psst and the loud exhaust man up the car a little.
