Help

Was making a trip last night. After fueling up and starting out of town, I started to pass a slower car. During the pass the car went in limp mode and wouldn't go over 40 so I pulled back in behind the slower car. Turned on to the first side road I came to and tried to get car over 40 but no luck. Suddenly got a "Service ESC" message on the Tach display, then on the center display the traction icon started flashing followed by the "ABS" light coming on the speedo cluster followed by "Service Air Bag" message. I am in the sticks and the nearest GM dealer is 40mi away. I had the GMPP Stage kit installed just over 2 weeks ago and haven't had any problems. Do you think it is safe to limp the 40+ miles or should I have it towed. As it is under warrenty does GM cover towing? Hope it is working for the local 24th running of the local cruise and car show on the 11th of July.

Upset in the hinderland of Indiana

Try resetting the ECU by pulling fuses 42 & 43, I think. Get a second opinion on that. Let it be without power for a while, half an hour seems to be the consensus timeframe. When fuses are replaced it should give you the ability to "drive normally" and get the car home... then it's off to the dealership.

Replace your battery (warranty?), this is caused by low voltage, has happened to several people.

Update

Just returned from dealer. My car is still there. Traced it to the alternator putting out over 18v at max throttle. They contacted GM Tech and were told that there had been several reports of this and replacing the unit has cured the others. Of course they don't have an alt to fit my GXP and have to order one. They can't order it until they pull mine and get the numbers out of it and have no idea how long it will be before they will have a replacement. Sigh they did give me a loaner a 2009 Tahoe to drive, what a boat after my GXP.

Believe it or not there are 3 different alternators for the GXP/RL 125 amp, all the same. and then there is the 140 amp different for manual or auto, seems like they could figure it out pretty easily. Enjoy the Forth in your Tahoe.

Well, we were able to pick it up last night at closing. GM Tech overnighted the alt to them and requested that they send the bad unit back same way. Seems to be working OK. The tech who worked on it had never driven one with the GMPP Stage upgrade. He had a smile on his face after testing it with the new alt. Said it was way quicker then the manual units he had been working on [mines an automatic].
