Now that I have the attention of the serious car crowd, no I did not get it, but, does anyone have the current status of the pre-sale orders. I ordered mine as soon as they started taking orders. How many do you think have been ordered.

Is anyone close to a cai yet, it looks like the NA version might work with a little alteration, even though it is reversed on the air box. Anyone have a thought on that.

Sorry for the cry wolf ploy

Did they even ever release the dyno charts for the 3" system yet?

Please help me (or point me to the best thread), a cat-back newbie, understand the performance/economy implications of this.

Thx,

Douglas

I had a hard time following the Solo thread. Do they have a high-flow cat and what will it fit on the output. Do they also have a test pipe that would mate with the Magnaflow system? I am going to pull the cat when I install the Magnaflow system and it would be easier if I didn't have to fab one myself.

Let me see if I can clear it up.
First Solo Performance has developed a 2 piece mandrel bent catback system for the GXP, as well as a hiflow cat. The catback system will be available in 3 "flavors": race, street race, and "Mach". The front pipe is the same on all 3 systems: 3" mandrel bent polished SS with braided flexjoint. This pipe will bolt to the stock 2-1/2" cat or SP's 3" hiflo cat.
The rear half is where the differences lie.
Race: a single 3" mandrel bent polished SS unrestricted pipe that exits out the driver's side cutout in the rear fascia. No muffler, no tip, pure performance.
Street race: 3" rear pipe splitting with a stamped Y connector into 2 2-1/2" mandrel bent mirror image pipes with polished 3" tips exiting out both cutouts in the fascia like the stock system. No muffler, but with a stock appearance and nearly the performance of the full race system.
GXP Mach: A 3" mandrel bent polished rear pipe split like the streetrace system but then entering a SP Mach polished dual outlet true X glass packed muffler. Muffler outlets have polished tips that exit in the stock locations. This is for the non racer performance enthusiast who wants or by law needs a muffled system that is lighter, less restrictive, and gives a nice throaty but not loud growl at the tailpipe.
Solo Performance's 3" hiflow cat is a direct replacement for the stock restricted cat, and can be used with any of the three "flavors" of their catback systems as well as with the stock 2-1/2" (why anyone would want to do this is ???) or with any other manufacturer's catback system that will bolt to the stock cat. They currently do not have any plans to produce a "test pipe" that eliminates the cat. Fabbing a test pipe yourself will be a big challenge from what I understand.

All the info and dyno results on all three of their systems can be found in the "Supporting vendor news" section of the Solstice products for sale forum. They are offering substantial discounts to forum members!

My race system arrived today and it is like a piece of automobile jewelry for my car, all shiny and flawless.

Douglas, let me see if I can explain it in clear terms:
A turbocharger (like is on the GXP) is driven by the engine exhaust gas pressure like a water wheel is driven by a stream, not by mechanical means off the engine. The faster the exhaust gas (the stream in the water wheel analogy) flows, the faster the wheel (turbo) turns, and therefore the more power it produces. Any restrictions in the exhaust system, i.e. catalytic converter, muffler, crimped or tight bends, small diameter pipe, etc. after the turbo reduces the exhaust gas speed and therefore reduces the power the turbo can produce.
Ideally you want as little or no restrictions after the turbo for maximum power and performance.
The "cat" or catalytic converter is part of the emission control system and by law must be present to be driven on the street. It is possible to replace a stock cat with a freer flowing aftermarket cat, but this is an expensive piece and may affect the vehicle warantee.
The next and easiest performance upgrade is to replace the exhaust system from the "cat back" to the tailpipe with a larger, smoother flowing, less restrictive aftermarket "catback" exhaust system that reduces/eliminates as much restriction as possible. This reduction in restrictions can have very significant performance gains, the tradeoff being a louder exhaust sound. How loud depends on if a muffler is used in the system or not, and how restrictive it is, but even a mufflerless system is not "Harley or racetrack loud" since the turbo itself and the cat have a muffling effect. The stock exhaust system/muffler is quite restrictive (notice how quiet it is... ).
As far as effect on economy, anytime you can improve the efficiency of the engine so it produces more power it will increase the economy as well, provided you can resist "exploring" that increased power with your right foot.
Hope this helps, ask again with specific questions if it doesn't.

Kanary,

Excellent and very informative!

There should be a section of articles like this that explain some of the things discussed in these forums more thoroughly. It should not be assumed that everyone knows what the heck all these terms mean and what all of this stuff does and how it all works.

Thanks again Kanary.

No problem! Remember the ONLY dumb question is the one you DON'T ask! If anyone ever does not understand something or has a question feel free to ask or PM me, and I'll try to help.
