Need technical assistance on RPM/Rev limiter

I did a search and did not see this posted yet so I have to ask. I was sitting in my automatic GXP today giving it a warm-up period and before I pulled out I gave her a couple of high rev pedal pushes (Mainly to hear my new magnaflow catback yell let's go). This is when I noticed that the max RPM I was reaching before a sputter/power break was 4000 RPM. I was in park going nowhere. I read on the post about the dyno test on the GXP auto putting out 209 horse and they were stating a shift into 5th at 5750 RPM I thinit was.

I am cunfused. Is this my first computer/mechanical issue with my baby? Is there a different RPM limit when in park (I try not to watch the gages when I am punching it)? I don't recall ever seeing my RPM's over 4000 to date thinking of it. If redline is 6500 why would the limiter be set at 4000? That is where the power spike usualy starts to really kick in.

I know I am asking multiple questions but it is to also set a baseline of where I am in the thought process.

I am assuming that the limiter is controlled by the PCM or am I wrong and it can be adjusted by other methods if need be.

Any thoughts from the more performance savy?

Only non cosmetic mods so far are the 3" magnaflow catback and a K&N air filter.

Did a quick search on the web, and found many cars that have the same issue. It looks like it's due to the fact that you're in park and there is no load on the engine.

As for the difference between where it tops out in park and the redline, I found this article from Motor Trend that explains it for the EVO.

For those who care about such things, the 5000-rpm rev limiter is still active from a standstill. It has nothing to do with optimizing a launch; quite the contrary. Mitsubishi engineers says this is to protect the pinion of the ring-and-pinion in the front differential from a sudden shock of gear-shredding torque. Japanese-spec Evos don't have it because their tires aren't as grippy as ours, and they allow some wheelspin on a hard launch. So now you know.

And the redline is 7k on an EVO.

I know you said you don't think it goes over 4k, when you're driving either, but I'm not sure about that one.

Thanks Mike,

I had a perfect opportunity on the way in to work this morning. 5:30AM, no cars, perfect straight away and sitting at a red light. I made sure traction control was off and set it in 4th. Light turned green, pedal hit the floor and yes it went over 4k. Shifted around 5400 so it is definatly a "PARK" thing. I plan to try it in neutral just to see if it does it there also. Thanks for posting the article clip. Good stuff.

My wife's Sihouette goes to 3800 in Park. Why my Redline is in the shop, I have a 2007 Impala rental that only goes to about 4K in Park. It's an "automatic" thing.

Just foolin. If I trusted the wife to be able to handle it as a manual I would have definatly bought one. This is the first Automatic I have ever owned in a small vehicle.

We automatic drivers don't get that same sweet blowoff sound either on deceleration. We have less back presure build up.

I was waiting for some smart ass to bring that up.
I would suspect that the manual's have the rpm limit too.

No prob, glad to see it's shifting over 4k.

Come on now. Just having a little friendly forum fun. You opened the door. Just couldn't help but walk through it.

I think your right. Being for protection I would figure it was on both too. Now that I know what it is causing it.

There are no switches on the manual transmission to indicate gear selection, so it appears that manual transmission drivers are to be trusted to mind their own revs.

Keep in mind also that a manual is shifted through neutral at every gear change, so varying rev limits would play havoc with driveability.

I think it runs through the VSS or whatever the sensor on the Kappa's is called that knows how fast you are going. See how high you can rev it up in neutral.

Or did you get a faster sol, the automatic?( to Gunny)

I'll let that question remain un-answered by me.

According to what I've heard lately, the MT is actually faster. GM reportedly published a 0-60 time for the MT that "most competent drivers" could attain, but that the capability is actually faster than the AT in the hands of a skilled driver.
