New GXP - New Ticking Noise.

Okay, I only have about 140 miles on my GXP.

As I was driving away from the dealership I noticed a small ticking noise directly related to the throttle usage. If i let off the throttle, the ticking goes away. When I am on it, the ticking is present, and it's frequency increases with more gas. At highway speeds, it is a bit harder to hear, but I know it is there.

It's origin seems to be directly ahead of me (the driver), in the left side of the car, under the hood.

It is driving me a little batty - my question is does anyone else has it?

If at idle this same ticking sounds like an electrical snapping and crackling - - it is normal and is the electric solenoid operated injectors. I questioned my Dodge dealer from day one on my Hemi wondering if a wire was off as it sounds similar to when a spark plug wire is arcing. These injectors you have are dealing with an even higher fuel pressure and the noise on a GXP may be higher than on your previous car, if it even had individual injectors.

Well according to some unnamed folks who gave me a ride in one (Thanks Again!) everyone of them will have that sound you described and Achieftain's responce is right on the money ...

It makes sense, chief, if we are both talking about the same thing.

I noticed also that if I downshift and do a little bit of engine braking, the noise comes back when I release the clutch. When the clutch is on 100%, no noise.

It could be construed as arcing noise. It is more of a tat-tat-tat ..quite rapid fire. Could be about 5 per sec on idle gas, and increases to 8-10 per sec with gas. Hard to count though, at that speed.

And thanks JustMike. It helps to know there is supposed to some noise, other than just the engine noise.

Ours has the same noise, it almost sounds like it's coming from behind the dash. It quits down when it gets warmer but doesn't go completly away.

The fuel pressure in a direct injection is very high, as much as 2250 psi and it takes ALOT of current to open the injector against that pressure.

I was at a unnamed place today where tests were being done on a
V8 direct injection engine. The OEM engineer there said the peak current
to open injector is 65 AMPS. Realize that this for a few milliseconds so it
is not an average current but it does show the power necessary to open
these new high pressure injectors. Modern peak and hold port fuel injectors
are 6-8 open and 2 hold amps for a comparison.

Hi there, turbofreak-soon-to-be-Michigan_ GXP- brother!!!! At what voltage for the actuation above? Remember, current doesn't mean squat for we of the "unwashed electrical masses". 746 watts = 1hp. HP = volts x amps. 65amps x X voltage = X HP. Describe it in something I can understand (you know, furlongs per fortnight )

I have asked the same question regarding the noise, there are 2 sounds, one at idle which a a slow (1 per second) quiet ticking, the second is the annoying louder clicking related to throttle and heard at 1800-3000 rpms, best heard with the top up and does not go away after the care is warmed up, clicks at a much faster rate than 1/sec, probably 5-10 clicks per second. It seems that some cars have it louder than others, Birdliver did not note the sound after driving it top up in a relatively cool climate. I have been trying to figure out if this is normal, I think the 1 click per sec at idle is , but the louder one if it is normal is a ridiculous design as it quite loud and can be heard over the stereo.

Okay, I could not have put it any better than that.

That is exactly my case. I can hear both noises, the idle clicking and the throttle ticking, as you described. I agree that the idle clicking is very very mild. I have to infact open up the hood to hear it and I absolutely do not mind that clicking. But the throttle ticking is very annoying if it is by design. As rmg put it, it can be heard over the stereo under the right conditions.

Besides rmg, who else has this?

I am just going to drive it around for some more time as it doesn't seem to hurt anything (I think) and see what other bugs I can find before taking it to the dealer. And share it with my compatriots here.

Mind you, I am okay with bugs and I know they will be there (Hey I write code for a living).

I only have the low rpm and cold ticking noise, if the hood is down and the radio is on at a minimum level the noise is not heard in the passenger compartment. With the hood up, at idle the engine sounds like a small diesel idling.

Piston slap - not good. And I doubt it was actually that. Cold weather would always bring out the tapping of hydraulic lifters until the oil would warm sufficiently. Dirty oil or plugged passages would do the same. Should not be the case on a new car, and this doesn't sound at all like lifter noise. If this were CarTalk's puzzler of the week I would put my money on the injectors. Pulse timing sounds about right.

But certainly to be sure it never hurst to stop back at the (or any) dealer and ask the service manager to listen (and even take a ride)

Fishing here.....

This is an electronic trottle, right? Could it be a freak instance of the speakers picking up the signals to the engine?

As I have mentioned before, the one at idle during the cold start can be heard, also if you increase the RPM's and the car is not fully warmed the ticks increase in frequency and loudness.
However once the engine warms the sound(s) is no longer heard in the cabin.
Now my car WAS PRODUCE BEFORE the shot down and so was Birdliver, 51GXP and a couple of others, so we need to have people tell us if the car with the loud ticking was delivered after the shot down.
