I used to run Red Line Oil's in my C5 Corvette but that was after the warrantee was gone. I put it in the Engine, Trany and rear end and noticed smoother shifting and saw a my fuel milage increase 1 - 2 mpg.
This is a copy of the post I made on the GXP forum:
I've been trying to figure out what brands of oil is the best. Tough job! well, not really. This thing called the internet helps. Many of GM's higher performance vehicles require synthetic oil. The oil filler cap says Mobil 1 5w30 or equivalent. So what is equivalent, and what isn't?
PLEASE READ P. 249 OF YOUR OWNERS MANUAL. It says we MUST use synthetic lubricants with the designation of GM4718M.
So what oils fall in this class? Here is the list, and the links that I found this info from:
GM4718M Registered Products, Revision Date: 2-May-2006
Current ILSAC GF-4 Products, Product Name Viscosity Grades ILSAC Grade
Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
CITGO SUPERGARD Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Mobil 1 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Northland, Synergy Synthetic 5W-30 GF-4
Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Note: The Mobil 1 is NOT the extended Performance, like I use in my other vehicles. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...te_id/1#import http://216.182.211.32/techlink/image...7e.html#story3
So which of the six is the best? The General likes Mobil, but I'm sure there is some financial compensation for putting their name on their oil fill caps.
EDIT: Valvoline Synpower and Amsoil ASL and XLF are added to the list. The list is now up to 8 manufacturers, with 9 types, Amsoil having 2 types
what does that mean "not the extended performance mobile 1 you use in your other vehicles........
...... i think i have extended performance mobile 1... 5-30 synth ....so that comment has me wondering ???? .....
... and for kicks - can someone say where you send oil for analysing ??......... i keep seeing people say they have done that but i have no clue where to find that service ?

Since Lucy'sDaddy started this thread with a GM link, as of the February TechLink issue, the list has been updated. Carries a Nov 26, 2007 revision date. Page three is the one to look at.
It now lists 8 products, some in different viscosity grades, as GM4718M Registered Products.
Guess that leaves the discussion to oils that say they meet the GM specs vs. GM which has an approved list. The link in the openning post, talks about GM actually testing the oils. So those that say they meet, but are not on GM's list, did they not pass the test or not be tested?

I don't work for Exxon...though I've been down there in Beaumont where they make this stuff. Let's put it this way, I don't think you can do much better. The QA on Mobil One is probably one of the highest standards in the business these days thanks to Exxon taking over the facility.
I work for ExxonMobil, and I believe that Mobil 1 had very high standards prior to Exxon purchasing Mobil Oil Corp. I think it's the best oil on the market. But I've used Amsoil in our race bikes. As anything else, it's all about personally preference.
Hi Lucy'sDaddy,
You mentioned in an earlier thread that you had ordered and gotten an oil filter made by Mobil. I can't find one and Advanced Auto, whom you mentioned, doesn't currently list it on their website. Do you have a parts number for this filter or can you direct me to a source so that I can order one? Thanks.
The most important point made in all these post's is no amter what type of oil you use, changing oil and filters regulary is by far the most important thing you can do for your vehicle ahnds down.
As far as what type of oil mostly relies on personnel choice. With that said, I myself have used Amsoil for as long as I've been driving both street cars and racing. The answer to the question of Amsoil's compatbility with GM's standards is YES to those who think that Amsoil is not GM approved your wrong. It's both GM 4718M and Gm 6094M certified.
My Pontiac dealership that services my GXP only puts Amsoil in the cars that require it, they will if asked will put Mobile1 in your vehicle if you perfer it. The only down side to Amsoil is its price, it costs more, but in the end you get what you pay for. I myself only wants whats best for my baby.
Oil aside, the most critical part of the oil circulation cycle is the ability of the filter to filter out the smallest particle possible, Hopefully down to 10 micron's, Which by the way only Amsoil filters have been consistantly able to do time and time again when test with other leading brands of filters. Understanding this, manufactures of the other leading brands of oil filters have improved upon the design and filtering capabilities of their filters.
I'm from the old school of drivers, with over 35 years of driving you used to have to change the oil and filters every 2000-3000 miles, points ,plugs and condenser. Of course you used to be able to work on your car, not like today when you need a computer to tell you whats going on.

I just edited the list in my original post. It is 8 brands, and 8 brands ONLY, as far as I'm concerned. Go the the link that both small dealer and I have shown, and read it for yourself.
Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Valvoline probably meet and exceed the GM4718M standard, but either they have not been submitted, as in Amsoils case, or haven't passed the test as claimed.
As far as Amsoil being recommended by the dealer, why not? They can make at LEAST double if not triple the profit on a quart of Amsoil as they can on Mobil 1. YOU do the numbers. What is COST on Amsoil vs. COST on Mobil 1?
BTW, I mis-spoke myself on the Mobil 1 oil filter. They do make filters and I did buy one, but not for the Solstice, but my Intimidator SS. SORRY!

Oops I didn't mean for that to sound the way it did. It's just...well Exxon has a way of doing things that are certainly different in some places. I did not mean to question the material prior or Mobil Oil Corp's standing. Just give me a minute to take my foot out of my mouth there.
