I am a new GXP owner. Have some questions about the turbo. When I accelerate in 2nd, 3rd or 4th I get a quick boost to 12 PSI or so and then it goes away instantly, back to 0. When the boost cuts off, the engine/turbo/transmission, I'm not sure what, makes a weird sound, like the horn honking on a 1925 model T. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?
Picked up my car from the dealer and they said the boost dropoff is normal. They told me for the boost to hold while I have it floored, I needed to have a supercharger but the Solstice comes with a turbocharger.
On my own, I have noticed a longer hold on the boost since switching to premium from regular. The dealer told me I could run regular when I bought the car so I tried a couple of tanks but was not satisfied. So now I am switching over to Shell 93 Octane.
Its hard to understand your description, but when you floor the car it should hold anywhere from 14-20psi until you shift. If the boost goes to 0psi when you have the throttle planted than you have a problem. The sound that you're hearing is most likely the blow off valve, but it shouldn't be that audible.
Your dealers explanations is idiotic, find another dealer who knows what they're talking about.

The next time you are at your Dealer, tell him THANKS since their comment about Turbo's have qualified them for the "LAUGH OF THE YEAR" Award which is given annually to the "Solstice Dealership" who places the largest size "Shoe In Their Mouth." And that shoe had to be from the foot of Shack O'Neil!!!!!!

I agree...when you take it to the dealer (a different dealer), ask to have the mechanic go with you on a ridealong. That way you can show him what you mean and he can experience it for himself.
Some dealers are great, but others are amazingly uninformed. I took mine in for a problem with choppy acceleration and the guy told me that "it is not a V-8 so I shouldn't expect it to pull like a V-8 when I floor it". What a weenie! But, it was the desk guy, not the mechanic...usually when you get to the mechanic they have a better idea of what is going on.
I wonder if the computer hears severe knock (since he stated he was running regular), and upon knock detection, the computer pulls timing out to no avail, then yanks the boost out before something breaks?
Not only do I run only Premium, I hunt stations that sell non-ethanol blended gasoline.

hahaha. That actaully made me laugh out loud in my office. Really stay away from that dealer, if they know that little about turbos, god knows what they would do to the car when they try to fix it.
My guess is one of the following: loose intercooler piping, damaged bov, hitting the rev limiter, hitting limp mode.
Don't run regular, run at least 91. Your dealer is moronic by the way.
The turbo creates boost by compressing air via a shaft that is connected to a turbine that is turned by exhaust pressure. If you burn gas via throttle or engine load then the turbo will compress the intake air. When you let off the gas, a valve opens up and releases the intake pressure and your boost goes back to 0 PSI. PSI does not necessarily increase at the same rate as engine RPMS.
Here's a hint, for a good launch with the GXP use the throttle to build up some boost and then release the clutch. I usually rev it to about 3500 RPMS to get some boost building up so I can launch with out any lag.
You'll figure out how to drive a turbo car soon enough.

i think you might want to describe your problem as "losing boost" because the turbo can't cut out....it keeps spinning. the problem is that the boost is not being held, either because of some mechanical problem or you are lifting off the gas.
