I'm gettting a weird noise and I'm not sure where it's coming from. Sound like a "hollow" sound like something rattling inside something or something has come loose and banging against something. It's intermittent and is will amplify from faint to noticeably loud. It gets magnified when going over bumps and doesn't have a set pattern to the rhythm except when driving over a bumpy road.
Weird thing is I do notice that it stops everytime I apply pressure to the brakes but will come back once I start to accellerate. The day I was going to bring it to the dealer, the noise "magically" dissappears. The next day it reappears. Sounds like it's coming from the tranny but there's no signs of leaks and again it does not continue after braking.
Could it be coming from the brakes? I also have the Gravana aftermarket wheels and wondering if that might be a source. Any input is welcome. Thanks.
I ahd the rattle in back too after installing Gravana J2 18" staggered. The noise is probably coming from your rear brake rotors. My set of wheels did not cover the last little lip on the hub. This left a space between the wheel and the rotor assembly meaning the wheel was not sitting flush meaning that the lugs were torqued, but not safely. I have not contacted gravana yet, but I think a set of the 5mm spacers they sell would take care of the problem.
I see that your original post was a month ago, let me know if you have come up with anything on this.
Actually I posted this thread about a little over a year ago. And I still haven't had it fixed yet. It's just one of those things that I've been meaning to get the dealer to fix but haven't had the chance to do so yet. I'm suspecting that it may have to do with the hand brake cables 'cause when I pull up on it gently while driving, the clanking noise dissappears and comes back when I release the handle. So, it's one of those low priority warranty issues that I need to get checked out before the warranty runs out.
Regarding the spacers, I'm not sure what good that will do. I never noticed whether my Gravanas sat flushed on the hub surface or not. They seem to fit without issues so far. I had these same wheels on my previous N/A before the GXP and there was no noise whatsoever. So, maybe the 18" are slightly different from the 19"? Either way, on a related topic, I thought about purchasing the spacers offered by Gravana just to bring the wheels out further by a little bit. More of an aesthetic thing than anything else. But that's really low priorty and not sure if spacers are a good thing or not as I hear different stories on the subject. So the jury is still out on that one.
I'll post what the dealer finds out if and when I get the chance to visit them for a more important issue some time.
you should go to a section of raod taht you know gives you the rattle. drive over it once without applying brakes and then once with ligth braking pressure. that's how i figured out that the rotors were loose. like i said in my previous post, I could reach between the spokes on my wheels and wiggle the rotors. also, if you remove the wheels check the flat areas around the lug holes to see if there are any indicators of the wheels not seating flush.
i'm not a car expert by any means, but I think that this should be a priority because of eneven stresses on the wheels. uneven stress can lead to internal cracking and ultimately wheel failure, a pain in the ass at low speeds, a disaster at freeway speeds.
but like you said, maybe it is just the e-brake cable.
