New development here (started hearing it at about 4000mi.) that I have not seen reported before. My best description is that it is like a harmonic howl. Happens only in 3rd gear when it is just barely under a load, usually between 2500 and 3500 rpms. It stops if I accelerate from there or if you just let off the gas and let it coast. We are due to visit the dealer for some other minor fix-its and I hope I can re-create it for them. It doesn't do it all the time. Anyone else heard anything like this before?

...try it again, but monitor the speed you are at, not the RPM and the gear. is it 30, 35, 40? And see if you notice it at that speed in fourth gear, or in second gear.
I had a 95 camaro that did the same thing. Long story short, it was the rear differential gears 'humming' or 'singing' due to being offset a little. I actually had my bro in law tell me not to worry about it. He was a transmission guy. He said I could fix it, but based on it's age, and the miles I had on it, that I shouldn't worry about it, that I could put another 100k miles on it.
I'm NOT saying do that with your SOL if that's the case! I'd go get it fixed on a new car. But I'm willing to bet that with the amount of differential leaking problems I've read on here, that maybe you are experiencing same sort of thing. Any noticable leaks under the car, or on the diff itself? Something to think about anyway. Maybe your diff is low on oil, and the gears are 'dryer' than they should be. Hope this helps.

Mine would do it in 3rd and 4th, at different speeds of course.
Under a slight load at a certain speed, it would get really loud.
I dropped my car off at the dealer 2 days ago because of that, the clunk, a rattle from the rear when coasting at low speeds with the clutch in, and the leak.
They are replacing my whole differential. Other people are reporting that the newly designed carrier, (part number starts with 158), eliminates the howl and even the clunk. Can't wait till mine is done to see for myself.
No leaks so far. Tried to make it happen in other gears. Only does it in 3rd.

Well, like I said, mine was at certain speeds. 32 to about 39 miles per hour. But look at the other posts. Seems to be a 'hummer' of a problem for most.

Thanks for the part # aztek. Gonna call my dealer. They've been sending me reminders to fill out the "Customer Satisfaction" survey. I'll be satisfied when they fix all the problems.
3891 miles on #10070 when the dealership test-drove it today regarding the "differential whine". They verified the whine in all gears under very light load but noted it to be extremely pronounced in 5th gear. My service manager is getting plans together for changeout of the entire carrier housing assembly.
Current Mods:
1. K&N Drop-in Panel Air Filter (until problems w/CAI's get resolved)
2. Solo-Performance Street Race exhaust
3. BSR Tune
4. GMPP CAI Kit Planned Future Mods:
1. High Efficiency FMIC
2. Improved IC Tubes
3. Upgraded Turbocharger Kit from Hahn Racecraft and BSR Stage II or III Tune to accommodate the modifications.
I've noticed this as well. I wonder if a leak is on it's way. I have about 4500 miles on it now. I'll keep my eye on the differential.

search "whine" noise maybe it's the same problem. Also, you will hear it clearly if the top is up. I had no leaks but the whine, and the differential is changed, whine is gone.
We also have the growl started at 3000 mi. We are also blessed with the clunk. Had a whine at 200 mi that ended up being the serpentine belt the tech at the dealer had no explaination for that. Oh yeah got the "birds in the trunk" also
