It seems that the rear Carrier might be the root cause in the leaking differential issue for some cars? Maybe, maybe not? I would like this thread to serve a tracking thread for the replacement of the rear carrier. If you have had this assembly replaced on your car please post the following information. Copy and paste as needed.
Carrier Replacement:

i thought the leak was related to the pinion bearing seal? the pinion is a completely different part than the carrier. so fixing the pinion leak would not require replacing the carrier, just removing and reinstalling it

In some cases the leaking diff.could not be given a long term "fix" by replacing a pinion seal or faulty vent valve. There have been several owners that have needed the entire rear "Carrier" replaced to remedy the issue. The purpose of this thread is to see how many owners have needed to go this route. I also believe there are two part numbers being used in this replacement. One Carrier assembly with a new number seems to be newly revised, while the other is the older original part #. I will try to track down both part numbers for the rear Carrier.
Found it:
Per windface: "#10344863 is the old number. #15825073 is the new one, with a revised front mount."

I think you're right, TMac.
Many of the carriers have been replaced because of a whining noise (from the carrier, dummy, not the driver! )
But some who have had their pinion seal leaks return have gotten new carriers too.
So I guess GM is still investigating.

I am going to still go out on the limb and say that the faulty overflow valve is the croux of this whole Diferential problem.
The valve is not working properly and is letting gear fluid out when it should not, consequently as you drive the gear oil gets lower and lower and not lubricating the gears as it should, they overheat, the tolerances start to go south, the diferential starts to whine, the rest is history.
