Tweety, I've got this mole hill I need made into a mountain...can you help?
Hang on Dorf on Molehills, I have my soapbox around here somewhere.....
Dorf on....something. Those videos crack me up. I hope you don't mind my using that when I follow you into a post?!
So when I called the dealer to schedule an appointment tomorrow morning, I told the dude about the leak and wanted to be sure that they had the parts.
"Welllll, we need to take a look at it to be sure that it is in fact coming from the differential....we have had a few cars coming in and one of them was just wet from something else."
You see....I am already irritated and I have about 11 hours before I get there tomorrow. It's this mindless crap that I don't get. Oh, like I was making it up about the drops on my garage floor! This tech writer has been around for almost a decade since I was taking my Birds in to him so why he would think that I was making something up is beyond me. He knows me and my cars yet he still wants to 'look at it'?
What fluids are near there that have a fitting and could leak? I for one know what diff fluid looks like, feels like, and smells like. After 40 years you tend to learn stuff if only be accident.
Well, not all people do but most car people do.
Between that and the fear of the side panels getting messed up has me wound a bit tighter than normal. This place did my Formula panels real good when that car first came out and this car being new is likely to suffer the same fate.

Have you ever replaced a front axle seal on a YJ.....man that was one stupid piece of engineering IMHO. I made my own puller and wrecked to seals before I got one seated properly. (what a pain)
Our toy was a TJ and I did the transfer case swap when ours got punctured and I put in ezlockers. They sucked. Spend the money for the air lockers.

Deep breath tweety, let it out slowly. When you take your car to him, gently cup his nads in your hand, give them a little sqeeze and say ever so nicely to him. " You hurt my car I hurt you".

...in with the good....out with the bad....in with the good....out with the...the...th.e.t.t........BAM
Great. Just passed out. Wonderful advise.
I will be doing the standard dealer prep. Wash the car and mark down all the damage or chips. I mask off the stereo and AC controls and leave a note for the a-holes in the back to leave them alone. I will also walk around with the dude to show him that I know that there is nothing wrong with the car and this time with this toy, I will put tape at the hood and advise him to NOT open my hood.
And as always that is standard dealer prep, reset the mileage counter and let them know this. Don't laugh, a buddy of mine saw what he thought was his car in a drive-thru when as he got closer, it was his. The putz at the dealership took his car to get food.
Personally I would have the guy arrested for theft. Test driving is just that-test driving. Not lunch fetching.
Do you get the idea that I don't trust service shops? Heck, I take my rims IN to be balanced and not the whole car.

Tweety, your tech writer is just covering his backside like any good tech writer would. You see the last guy, who unlike you, didn't know his butt from a button came in with cat pee all over his Differential thinking it was leaking. So you see, it's only the tech writer protecting you from yourself. Just in case that same cat got under your car, and you spent all that time sniffing and squishing that fluid between your fingers,....you didn't lick it did you,...saying, by godfry that's differential fluid....or cat pee...no differential fluid for sure, could be ferret poo though.
So you see, your dealer is only as big a jerk as he makes himself out to be. As the old saying goes.... if you're an idiot and you keep your mouth shut, no one will know! or something like that...
Dealer visit done. Part on order.
Wasn't so bad. I spent a lot of time talking with the parts guy going through some stock to come up with my latest mod.
Anyone want that seat belt loop or are you happy with reaching all the way back for it?

Tweety, I am glad it is working out for you. Just wanted you to know I really enjoy reading your posts. Everyday I particularly look for them. I wish you were in the Maryland area, because I am sure very shortly you will know more about our cars than anyone other than a service tech.

Um, okay...cool.
My boss and my wife say that I am obsessing with the car. I call it being bored.
I used to race for a hobby and now I have nothing to do until college starts for me next month. Yeah I know, a 40 year old college student, but it will keep me busy.
This car bothers me because I don't know how it was built and until I pull it all apart, the dribble from me will be ongoing.
Tomorrow the seats come out so I can pull the seat belt off the floor and thread it into the seat belt loop that I put in. Pulling the seat is another reason for me to clean the carpet actually!

I am one of the few that don't follow the "dealer is right" mentality. Just because someone works at the dealer doesn't make them smarter than us. They are still just people that have to learn about this car as they go.
I, for one, have a very hard time trusting Anyone to do a "maintenance issue" on any of my vehicles.....Why?, Although i'm sure there are many a fine mechanic out there, I seem to get the one that is having a bad day, not qualified, hungover, fight with girlfriend, or plain just don't care about "My Auto". I've had a pinion seal replaced on a 88 nissan (under warranty) only to find it wasn't properly torqued......causing the whole rearend gearset to be replaced, Major scratches on my door paint trying to fix a factory stereo....(they decided to look at the speakers after i told them the volume knob was messed up....it was the knob)......broken wheel studs simply because they didn't use a torque wrench ...like i asked them too.....should i go on?
If i worked on aircraft that way.....someone could be killed....or worse

Tweety, I like you don't trust shops. I get very nevous when they have my baby any of them. But sometimes you have to let them do the warentee work to protect yourself.
Now once they are out of warrantee I have a great mechanic, not a tech but a real actual mechanic, you know the guy that finds out what is wron and then fixes it!
PS. Very interested in the seatbelt loop, waiting for the pictures and part #'s.
