Ok, so apparently I didn't do enough information gathering on the whole recall issue.
My understanding was that the differential leak was part of the Pinion Seal Recall. So when call my dealer (Dealer "A") for the fourth time in as many days and they still don't have the part yet, I call another local Pontiac dealer (Dealer "B") asking if they have the parts for the recall, and told me "yea we have some in stock." I called Dealer A back & told them I would be picking my car up & going to B. A says they will call B and buy the part from them. A calls me back a while later saying that B doesn't have the correct part. Of course I don't believe them and want to check for myself, so i call B: "there is just one part for this recall and we have it." Back to A, I ask them is going on, they say "We called B, they don't have the part YOU need." Turns out, the part i need is NOT for the pinion recall, but for the rear end differential leak. He called it a Carrier for a Non limited Slip differential rear end. Now I am beginning to understand, that I have 2 problems, the recall AND a differential leak? (someone reading this please confirm / correct me if i'm still wrong?)
In any case, there is still NO ETA on the part i need, so I go to get the car so my baby can be garaged until it comes in, but had to sign a release form basically saying if i crash due to a malfunction they warned me.
All this headache & trouble but still rather deal with this than keep driving my former vehicle, an Axiom.
the pinion recall is the pinion seal on the rear diff.....do you have a leak now..or are you just taking the car in for the recall/ it sounds like you have an existing leak now...I dont know there is a difference between the pinion seals for a LSD and non LSD equipped vehicle to be honest....I thought the differences were internal to the housing..and not the differential housing itself....when you use the term carrier.....it normally refers to the entire differential...which it sounds like your dealer is replacing, vice just the pinion seal......if that is the case..it should come with the 08 housing....which includes the new seal....otherwise Im confused now as well
the question I would ask the dealership is are you replacing the entire differential or just a seal on the differential.....and if it is just a seal...is it a different one than that listed in the recall.....

Get the PART # that Dealer A has on order ... Pinion Seal Kit part number 19179933 is the part # for the RECALL. If this is the same part that Dealer B has is stock then something is "rotten in Denmark".
Now ... if they are replacing your entire differential ... THAT is a different story.

Dealer B has this part number in stock. Dealer A gave me an entirely different (no pun intended) part number, that I do not have in my possession at work. But it is DEFINITELY NOT the Pinion Seal Kit part number. He said it was a part for the "Carrier". He also kept referring to the "rear end" of the car.

GOD I hate this thread....makes me want to poke my eyes out...The other thread about crashing is getting me to that point too!
I think this thread is a GodSend, 'cause us folk who bought our Solstices preowned didn't get no stinkin' recall letters. How else would I have known, other than ending up wrapped around a tree somewhere!
I think this thread is so extremely valuable! Here we have the first recall of a car that is so dear to our hearts and because of this forum media that could not exist in the relatively near past we are getting almost close to streaming coverage of what now appears to be a cornicopia of human experiences and emotions associated with this our first recall. I think this is great. Based on my conclusions from this thread I have broken down the logical path (IMO) that Sols should take regarding this. 1. If your Sol's posterior is not leaking, ride this this thing out 'till the smoke clears and avoid the dealer for other maintenance if possible 'till they get a handle on it. 2. If it is leaking make sure you apply all of the experiences of this thead to try to minimize the potential for long waits, frustration, and of course STRESS ...This forum is so valuable and I am so greatful for it....and it has shown "When the going gets tuff", the power and knowledge of the Solstice Forum at least allows us to express, reflect, share, complain and ultimately improve our common interest thru our unity.

You may have done too much. That could be the reason you assumed recall when the dealership was saying differential.

The recall is to replace the Drive Axle Pinion Seal, Rear Differential in the Solstice. This is done so that the original seal doesn't leak and potential cause other problems.
A rear differential can leak from several different areas. The pinion seal, either side axle seal, the side cover gasket, the drain plug, the fill plug, the vent, even the actual metal itself could (in theory) be porous.
The most common leak source, by far, is the pinion seal.

It is quite surprising that the whole rear differential (differential carrier asembly) would need to be replaced to cure just a leak.
It would be interesting to find out just what the dealership found leaking that requires the whole unit to be replaced.
Also depending on what part number rear differential is installed, you actually may end up not needing the recall.
Being the less common of the two possible rear differentials, it is not as surprising that the non-Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is currently not available. What is more surprising is that your car was not equipped with LSD.
There are only 5 dealerships showing nationwide with one of those differentials in their inventory on one of the common parts locators used by GM dealerships. (GA-CA-VA-FL-FL)

The same seal, therefore seal kit, fits a LSD and non-LSD rear differential.

Only if the differential is 2008 production specs would it include a revised seal. Although said to be different than the seal in the 2006-2007 replacement seal kit used on the recall.
If dallas32822 ends up with a non-2008 spec rear differential, they will still need to have the recall done.
