   High Pitch Whine, Fuel Pump?

I have a question. I just got back from a little spin, both the wife and I heard a high pitch whine coming from the back. After further listening it seems to be coming from under the clam shell and the right side of the car. It does not start tell after 40 MPH. After some time it did stop, but once we stop and park for dinner it started back up. I am thinking it might be the gas pump making the sound. I had the wife driving and I opened the small flap for raising the top and it seemed to be louder if I put my ear by the opening. And yes I probly look very stupid kneeing on the seat facing backwards tring to listen with my ear on the back deck lid. I have had the fuel pump on my Regal go out and before it did there was a loud whine if you took the gas cap off and listen there. I did listen at the gas cap when it was parked but did not hear anything, and yes it was running. Any other thoughts, I will be calling the dealer.

Mine Started at 3000 mi. and got worse (louder) no clunk no leak in diff. just a whine or howl at floating speeds anywhere from 40 mph to 60.Took mine in
yesterday for a oil change and the whine I was able to have the service tech go for a ride to hear it.Didn't take long till he heard it.Anyway couldn't get much info when I picked it up other than they had to SOP a part in for the rear end and would call me when it comes in but it would fix the whine I don't have a part# or know what they're going to do yet or if this is a fix but i'll let you know. There are a few other forum members that also have this problem but not on the scale as the clunk or the leak.Mine got very loud even the srv tech that heard it said that it shouldnt be doing that.

A singular part? Hmm, I wonder if that part is the pinion bearing. That would explain why mine started after the differential leak. My dealer was planning to replace my rearend gears but I'm hesitant to have that done. The pinion bearing would be a cake walk (relatively).

GM used to have very noisy fuel pumps. People would make fun of my old 1997 Tahoe hearing the fuel pump from at least 30 ft away. It was the most annoying sound, but every dealer and repair shop I went to said it was SOP. At first I didn't believe them, but after taking time to listen to other Tahoes and Yukons of the time, they did it too. I really hope GM stopped using this kind of pump, but I have no clue.

Since your noise seems to be intermitant, it's not this same thing. My old Tahoe noise was constant, all the time. I don't know what your issue is.

Everyone will laugh.

I was heading back from the run in Ohio just getting on I76 headed east and I thought a plane was getting ready to land on my car. It quit after about 15 minutes and hasn't happened again. It was very strange.

that was a decision apparently made by a dealership..not a TSB directing it....or GM directed......

Talk to the dealership today. The head of service is also one of the owners, he asked me several question.

1. If I had less then 1/4 tank of Gas. answer YES

2. If I had ran the tank low recently. answer YES, before the last fill I had been watching the driver information center and it said I had 60 miles to empty, I decide to see how low it would go. I drove it for about another 20 miles and the center now read fuel low. I then filled the tank.

He stated that he beleives that the pump may have over heated and is going out. He asked me to check the following out when I got home, did not have the Solstice at work. He asked me to just turn the key on and listen. I did this and you could hear the fuel pump energizing and then continue to make alot of noise. When I open the rear deck it was very noisy. He told me to call him back with what I found. So at this time it sounds like if the gas runs low you can screw up the fuel pump. Will keep everyone informed what I find out.

If it was a fuel pump whine, you would hear it all the time, especially when idling, much less so when you are driving. I have replaced 4 fuel pumps thus far (two on my Camaro and two on my Jags and the whine has always preceeded a complete fuel pump failure).

If the whine is associated with driving, my experience has been faulty driveline u-joints (dried-up). A dry rear end would also whine as well.

Let us know what the final verdict is.

I had a similar problem with electric fuel pumps in the tanks of two different vehicles. Mine was a loud hissing noise in both cases. Covered under warranty.
I was told it was caused by the placement of the "fuel pickup". If placed too close to the bottom of the tank, the noise is louder. Problem solved by removing the tank, and adjusting the placement of the "pickup"

I also hear the high whine coming from the right rear. It's pretty steady and wasn't noticable a month ago. I had the pinion seals replaced early April. Need more info on this 'cause I don't like it.

I just started another thread about a 3rd gear howl, kinda sounds like it may be the same thing. Didn't see this until after I started it.
